Jan and Beta Popper Endowed Professorship in Opera

  1. Position Description

The holder of this endowed chair will be a distinguished professor of music whose teaching and research/creative work includes opera and other fields of music. The holder of this professorship must be a highly regarded musicologist, ethnomusicologist or composer whose work is known nationally and internationally. As a recognized leader in her or his field, the holder of this professorship would be expected to pursue original research resulting in articles and books or creative work resulting in musical compositions; to participate in national and international conferences and performances; and to take a leadership role at UC Davis in fostering the field of opera as part of the larger world of musical research and composition.

The term of the professorship is for four years, with the possibility of reappointment at the discretion of the Chancellor per regularly established University procedures for endowed chair/professorship appointments (APM 191, UCD 191).

The endowment income will support the professor’s research/creative work, teaching and service, and further the mission of the Department of Music and the campus. The income may also be used to help subsidize a performance of an opera or a portion of an opera.

The responsibilities of the chair include engaging in scholarly/creative work that includes opera as a field of music; teach in both undergraduate and graduate programs, consistent with departmental teaching policies; provide leadership in the field of opera, and be fully engaged in the activities of the Department of Music; and to enhance the intellectual/creative life of the campus as a whole.

  1. FTE for the Position

Because there are currently no new FTE for this position, the recruitment will be internal.

  1. Statement Regarding the Adequacy of Space and Resources for Support of the Position

Incumbents will retain appointments in their current departments. Support resources will include normal departmental support plus income from the endowment for this position. Endowment income may be used for any activity related to the incumbent’s scholarly or creative work.

  1. Selection Criteria

a) Demonstrated excellence in research and creative work related to opera.
b) Demonstrated capability for programmatic impact and leadership.

  1. Description of Selection Process

a) Applications will be accepted through February 1, 2019 and should be sent online at:

b) Applications will be reviewed for completeness; candidates will be informed if their applications are incomplete and given a reasonable amount of time to provide the missing materials.
c) Each application will be reviewed by the entire Recruitment Advisory Committee for basic qualifications. The Recruitment Advisory Committee will evaluate the applications and rate each as “unqualified” or
d) The Recruitment Advisory Committee will meet to discuss and decide on the final slate of top candidates from the qualified pool of applicants. A list of those to be recommended for an interview will be presented to the Dean for consideration and further action.
e) Upon approval by the Dean to begin the interview process, the Recruitment Advisory Committee chair will schedules candidates for interviews with:
• Recruitment Advisory Committee
• Department Chair
• Dean
• Other interested faculty

f) The department chair will provide the following to interviewees:
• Description and terms of the chair, including relevant policies.
• Estimates of income available to the chair.

• List of any and all responsibilities that must be fulfilled as part of the endowed chair.
• Information about duration of the appointment, performance review, and potential reappointment to the chair.
g) The Recruitment Advisory Committee solicits input about the candidates visiting the campus from interviewers. With the endorsement of the Dean, the Recruitment Advisory Committee recommends to the Chancellor the candidate acceptable for appointment. The department will submit a Final Recruitment Report to the dean for approval.

  1. Advertisement

The advertisement will be internal to the UC Davis Campus. The position announcement will be sent via email to all Professors of Music at the rank of Associate Professor and higher. In addition, hard copies of the announcement will be placed in each faculty member’s departmental mail box.
