COURSE:
ABT 150 / LDA 150 – Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (4 units)
Lecture – 3 hours; Laboratory – 3 hours

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Basic concepts, principles, and methods of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are presented. Topics include spatial data structures, database design, GIS data creation, GPS, spatial analysis, cartography, and geospatial visualization. Students gain hands-on experience using ESRI ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online through weekly laboratory exercises and a final GIS project.

The course serves Landscape Architecture, Sustainable Environmental Design, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, and related majors and carries General Education credit (SE, VL).

Typical enrollment is approximately 150 undergraduate students per offering, with laboratory instruction delivered through 5 TA-led sections of approximately 30 students each.

APPOINTMENT DATE:
Service periods aligned with quarter(s) taught. The course is taught in Spring quarter 2026.
Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be responsible for:
• Teaching one undergraduate course, ABT 150 / LDA 150 – Introduction to GIS (4 units)
• Delivering three hours of lecture instruction per week to a class of approximately 150 students
• Overseeing and coordinating weekly laboratory instruction delivered by 5 Teaching Assistants (approximately 30 students per section)
• Supervising, mentoring, and coordinating TAs, including:
o Weekly TA coordination meetings
o Training on ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and lab content
o Oversight of grading consistency and student support
• Maintaining and updating lecture and laboratory materials as needed
• Modifying (as needed) and grading assignments, quizzes, exams, and a final GIS project
• Holding office hours and supporting student learning in GIS concepts and applications

The course includes lectures on GIS fundamentals (coordinate systems, projections, data models, geodatabases, spatial analysis, raster analysis, terrain modeling, geostatistics, GNSS, cartography, and web mapping) and weekly hands-on computer laboratories using ESRI ArcGIS Pro and related tools.
