Position description
The Department of Design announces a temporary lecturer position to teach a section of DES 143, during Spring 2026 quarter
Course Description: DES 143 surveys the history of fashion design from the earliest times to the present, with particular emphasis on the ancient Middle East and the Common Era histories of North America and Europe. The course examines clothing and personal adornment through aesthetic, functional, social, economic, political, and cultural lenses, situating fashion within broader systems of power, identity, labor, and material culture.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
Design and deliver engaging in-person lectures covering global fashion history Coordinate weekly discussion sections that foster critical thinking.
Develop and assess assignments such as exams, written and visual analyses using visual archives and museum collections
Integrate diverse perspectives, including issues of colonialism, race, gender, class, religion, labor, and sustainability in fashion history.
Manage course readings and multimedia materials using Canvas
Hold regular office hours and communicate effectively with students, teaching assistants, and departmental staff.
Collaborate with teaching assistants to ensure consistent grading, discussion facilitation, and student support.
Uphold academic integrity and contribute to an inclusive, respectful learning environment.
Qualifications:
Graduate degree in Fashion History, Design History, Art History, Material Culture, Cultural Studies, or a closely related field.
Demonstrated expertise in fashion history or dress studies.
Prior college-level teaching experience or demonstrated pedagogical training.
Strong ability to contextualize fashion within social, political, economic, and cultural frameworks.
Experience teaching large lecture courses and/or coordinating discussion sections.
Commitment to inclusive pedagogy.

Spring Quarter: March 26th - June 11, 2026
Salary and Appointment Level:
Commensurate with degree and experience.

Qualifications
