The Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at the UC Davis Health School of Medicine and the UC Davis Children’s Hospital are seeking a full-time Academic Pediatric Hematologist at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor rank in the Health Sciences Clinical Professor (HSCP) or Professor of Clinical (X) series.

This position will provide direct patient care for children, adolescents, and young adults with benign hematological conditions, focusing on hemostasis. Additional responsibilities include general benign hematologic diseases, i.e., hemoglobinopathies, cytopenias, and cellular dysfunctions. Participation in the institution's research/scholarly mission is expected, either as a collaborator or as an intellectual leader of clinically or basic science research projects, depending on the academic series chosen for appointment. The successful candidate will have multiple opportunities for collaboration within the UC Davis Health System, including the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center, UC Davis School of Public Health, UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine (Veterinary Cancer Center), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories, Center for BioPhotonics Science and Technology, and the Institute for Regenerative Cures. Proven excellence in clinical care, teaching, and basic or clinical translational research is required. The provider will devote 70-90% of their time to clinical responsibilities in the inpatient and outpatient settings. The remaining effort will be used to support the applicant’s academics interests and qualifications.

The Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology is a dynamic growing team comprised of ten specialty physicians and five advanced practice providers. The division provides care to 100-120 new pediatric oncology patients per year and participates in the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), a federally funded cooperative dedicated to the treatment of childhood cancers. The division has a FACT accredited Bone Marrow Transplant and Cellular Therapy program.

The hematology program includes a dedicate Hemoglobinopathies program, treating 100 patients with sickle cell disease, 30 patients with thalassemia. Patients with bleeding and clotting disorders are supported by the only federally funded Hemostasis and Thrombosis Center (HTC) in Northern California, up to the border of Oregon. Led by Pediatric and Internal Medicine Medical Directors, it is one of 13 centers in the Western States Hemophilia Network (California, Nevada, Hawaii, and Guam). Comprehensive care is provided for 550 patients, including 250 children and adolescents seeing approximately 70 new patients with coagulation disorders each year. A 340B program funds dedicated adult and pediatric nurse coordinators, a nurse practitioner, social workers, physical therapist, and administrative team. The clinical trials unit, with five coordinators and a supervisor, conducts research in gene therapy, novel drug development, epidemiology, and public health surveillance.

The UC Davis Children’s Hospital is based on the UC Davis Health System campus in Sacramento, California serving a population of over 1 million children in the Northern California, Central Valley, and Western Nevada regions. Sacramento is an easily accessible, family-oriented city in close proximity to the San Francisco Bay area, Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the California coast, and Napa Valley.

Qualified applicants must possess an MD or DO, with a California professional license or eligible for licensure in California, fellowship trained in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, board eligible/certified in pediatrics and pediatric hematology-oncology, possess, excellent clinical care skills in all areas of hematology, with a special focus on hemostasis. Experience in a clinical or academic setting that includes clinical care, teaching, and research that would meet requirements for appointment at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level in one of the University of California’s clinically intensive academic series [Clinical (X) or Health Sciences Clinical Professor (HSCP) series] is preferred but not required.
