Position description

The Department of Human Ecology at the University of California, Davis is interested in applicants with expertise in human development, particularly those with expertise in the biological embedding of developmental experience and environmental exposures. A person with research and teaching focused on this area of development will complement the existing faculty in the HDFS program. The successful candidate will have an active program of research and demonstrate experience and excellence in endophenotypic biological processes that play a role in mediating the effects of environmental influences on human health and development across the lifespan. Physiological systems of inquiry might include stress physiology (oxidative, or neuroendocrine), immune system activation, or central nervous system functioning. The individual who is selected for this position will participate in developing collaborative research projects with faculty in the Department of Human Ecology (comprised of Human Development and Family Studies; Community and Regional Development; and Landscape Architecture and Environmental Design). We are especially interested in candidates who study the influence of cultural, social, familial, economic, or physical environments on development. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in child or adult development, will be a member of the Ph.D. program in Human Development.

Candidates must hold an earned doctoral or equivalent degree in Human Development, Psychology, Education, or other related field and have a strong record of or promise of a strong record of relevant research.

This is an assistant professor, nine-month tenure-track appointment. The position has requirements for teaching, research, and university and public service in the area of human development, and includes the expectation that the appointee will conduct mission-oriented research and outreach of relevance to the California Agricultural Experiment Station (http://www.ucanr.org/aes.shtml). The successful applicant will have demonstrated the ability to conduct research and publish on topics related to human development, with a focus within any area of the lifespan, and with interests that overlap with other departmental programs such as Community Development, and Landscape Architecture and Environmental Design.

The candidate should have a strong interest in academic inquiry and teaching, with substantial knowledge within one or more phases of the lifespan. The successful candidate is expected to develop a strong program of research, contribute to the core teaching in the undergraduate program in Human Development as well as graduate program in Human Development, and mentor and direct research programs of graduate students.

The candidate is expected to teach 3 courses per academic year in the undergraduate and the graduate programs in Human Development. Teaching is assigned by the department chair and faculty are expected to teach two undergraduate courses and one graduate course each year.

This recruitment is conducted at the assistant rank. The resulting hire will be at the assistant rank, regardless of the proposed appointee's qualifications.
