Position description

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at University of California, Davis invites applications for a tenure-track position as Director of First Year Language Program at the Assistant/ Associate Professor level, in Spanish Applied Linguistics and language pedagogy with a specialization in any of the following areas: functional or cognitive grammar, corpus linguistics or other areas, effective July 1, 2015.

The successful candidate will lead and coordinate an established Spanish language program for a culturally and ethnically diverse student body. Candidates with expertise in Spanish linguistics and language pedagogy in addition to experience in administering language program with emphasis on First Year Language Instruction, are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants should possess native or near-­‐native language competency in Spanish and English; knowledge of Portuguese is also desirable. The lower division language courses are taught primarily by a large group of graduate students, working as Teaching Assistants or Associate Instructors (from 30 to 40 in each given year). They should have an expert understanding of second language acquisition and applied linguistics and a specialization in functional or cognitive grammar, corpus linguistics or other area, and a strong commitment to undergraduate education. Applicants must demonstrate exceptional promise as scholars and teachers, and have the ability to lead an established language program with a large group of graduate students. The successful applicant will be able to contribute to the shared governance and intellectual life of the department and the larger UC Davis community. A Ph.D. in Spanish linguistics, SLA, or any other related field is required and must be in hand prior to the first day of classes, September 21, 2015. Teaching responsibilities will include language courses at all levels as well as graduate and undergraduate courses in Spanish linguistics and language pedagogy.
