Position description
The Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of California, Davis invites applications for a qualified Junior Specialist for research support. This position will be involved in one interdisciplinary study focusing on inpatient research efforts for a multi-center pragmatic randomized clinical trial to reduce post-discharge surgical site infection. This role will contribute to extensive blind chart reviews and data redaction in collaboration with the site Principal Investigators, adhering to NHSN-defined criteria to ensure methodological rigor and compliance. The Junior Specialist will primarily engage in comprehensive post-operative chart reviews, applying systematic approaches to data extraction and analysis to support research integrity and clinical outcomes assessment. The successful candidate will perform and participate in duty related research support and coordination of clinical study including; follow up calls, surveys, organizing and maintaining lab supplies, research documentation education and conducting chart reviews/redaction. The appointees will work under the supervision of the local PI.

Study Coordination & Support
• Contribute to a large, federally funded inpatient surgical infection prevention study.
• Coordinate and manage datasets, research documentation, and regulatory compliance.
• Assist with patient recruitment, enrollment, and implementation of study protocols.
• Support recruitment goals by identifying eligible patients, administering forms, and surveys, and interacting with hospital administration and surgeons.
Protocol Execution
• Adhere to detailed protocols and manuals of operation for study projects.
• Undergo training, scripting, and activities requiring patient interaction to ensure professional and accurate execution of responsibilities.
Data & Inventory Management & Reporting
• Maintain detailed logs of research activities.
• Report adverse events, triage, and refer patients for further assessment as needed
• Prepare and maintain laboratory supply inventory.
Participant Interaction
• Communicate with participants regarding appointments, answer questions about the protocol, and provide educational support.
• Administer surveys and deliver education guides as needed.
Collaboration
• Work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI), external Project Manager, and collaborators.
• Conduct phone, video and in-person meetings with multi-agency project teams and research coordinators.
Regulatory Compliance
• Follow and maintain regulatory documentation and UC Davis lab safety regulations.
• Update and modify standard laboratory procedures based on research project needs.
Professional Competence 5%:
• May attend academic/scholarly study conferences to present research findings
• Stay current with relevant literature and developments in infection prevention
• Jr. Specialists will be invited to be included in future publications due to their involvement and recruitment efforts
University and Public Service 5%:
• University-Based Research: This research study contributes to advancing knowledge in the field of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and provides valuable insights for both academic and healthcare communities.
• Public Service: The findings of this study support public health efforts by offering evidence based solutions for infection control across healthcare facilities.
NUMBER OF POSITIONS AVAILABLE: 1
TERM OF APPOINTMENT: One year with the possibility to extend to two years maximum, based on the needs of the research project.

Qualifications
Bachelors degree in scientific discipline, public health or related area.
Excellent verbal and written communications and presentation skills; excellent organizational skills; and excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively in a diverse team.
Attention to detail.
Ability to maintain accurate database files.
Highly attentive to proper handling of confidential information and documents. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Windows.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-based environment; project management and coordination skills; ability to prioritize tasks and meet multiple deadlines on concurrent projects.
Ability to establish cooperative working relationships with patients, co-workers, & physicians.
The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and an interest in basic science; as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
The ideal candidate will have knowledge of medical terminology.
