Position description

Applications are invited for the position of Academic Coordinator I for Introductory Biology within the College of Biological Sciences at the University of California, Davis. Primary duties of the position are training and supervising graduate student instructors for laboratories in a broad-scale Tree of Life course (BIS 2C). Secondary duties include training undergraduate learning assistants and providing technical and logistical support for course lecture instructors. The Academic Coordinator oversees the labs, supervises the teaching assistants and support staff, and teaches once per year, in addition to contributing to course improvement. The candidate will have a thorough knowledge of modern biology relating to prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms, a deep interest in teaching methods and effective teaching, and a good understanding of phylogenetics. An interest in plant and/or animal phylogenetics is preferred, but not required. This is a 9-month position with an initial two year appointment.

Qualifications: a master’s degree in the Biological Sciences or a related field; along with a demonstrated understanding of modern biology, including recent advances in evolution and phylogeny; the willingness to keep abreast of scientific change; demonstrated interest and expertise in instruction; demonstrated knowledge of modern methods of pedagogy and assessment; excellent interpersonal skills; excellent time management skills.

A masters degree in the Biological Sciences or a related field

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

The candidate should have a demonstrated understanding of modern biology, including recent advances in evolution and phylogeny, the willingness to keep abreast of scientific change, and a demonstrated interest and expertise in instruction. In addition the candidate must possess excellent interpersonal skills and excellent time management skills.

Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)

An interest in plant and/or animal phylogenetics is preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of modern methods of pedagogy and assessment is preferred.

A PhD in the Biological Sciences or a related field is preferred.
