Position description

Dr. Anya Brown in the Department of Evolution and Ecology, based at the Bodega Marine Lab seeks to fill a full time position at the Junior Specialist Level starting in Summer 2026. The position is one year with the potential for renewal. The position is located at the UC Davis Bodega Marine Lab in Bodega Bay. Successful candidates will be responsible for managing the labwork, particularly processing of samples and culturing a marine pathogen, fieldwork and mesocosm work in marine environments, interpretation of data, contributing to writing up of results and presenting at conferences. As appropriate, the individual will be a co-author on the presentations and publications to which they contribute. The following are the expected duties:

Lab and Field Duties (90% effort)
• Assisting with protocol generation, general lab organization and cleaning and chemical safety
• Prepare and maintain cultures of marine pathogen, Labyrinthula zosterae and marine plants (Z. marina)
• Working with Dr. Brown and collaborators on new and on-going research activities – including molecular bench work, lab work and field work in marine environments (e.g.,with eelgrass pathogens in seagrass beds)
• Fieldwork could include working in cold and wet conditions during early mornings/late evenings around Bodega Bay, California
• Scheduling and managing of research as necessary

Professional Competence and activity (5% Effort)
• Participate and contribute to the development of an inclusive working environment for our research
• Engage in the Brown Lab and Bodega Marine Lab Community through participation in meetings and seminars

Service (5% Effort)
• Assist with lab oversight and maintenance.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

BS/BA in a biology, ecology, marine science, microbiology or related field.
Experience with culturing and/or DNA Extraction, PCR, running gels and general molecular skills
Experience with fieldwork and/or lab experiments
Ability to work independently
Ability to problem solve in lab and field settings
