Salary range: The salary range for this position is $172,200-$207,100. “Off-scale salaries” and other components of pay (i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step) are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions, qualifications, and experience.

Position description

The Department of Surgical and Radiological Sciences in the School of Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis is expanding its surgical services and seeks a veterinarian with advanced training in small animal dentistry and oral and maxillofacial surgery. Areas of expertise or interest that would fit well with current case load and expansion trajectory include maxillofacial fracture management including internal fixation and minimally invasive techniques, TMJ surgeries, surgical oncology cases including extensive mandibulectomies and maxillectomies, axial patern flaps, and palatal defects management; however, all areas of dentistry and oral surgery expertise and interest are welcomed and expected for residency training.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical: The position includes a 70% clinical effort to the Small Animal Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH). Clinical effort to the Small Animal Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) will include night on call and weekend, resident back up for dentistry and oral/maxillofacial cases only, and is calculated into the 70% Clinical effort. The number of annual clinical weeks is currently 30-32. The Small Animal Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service at UC Davis is aiming to run two receiving schedules: a Teaching Service (with residents and DVM students) and a Faculty Service (residents and students are optional). Clinical time for the position will be distributed between the Teaching and Faculty services. Key responsibilities for the position include [1] directing, instructing, and supervising veterinary students and residents; [2] providing health care and service to in-house and referral patients; and [3] advising and consulting with referring veterinarians and clients.

Teaching: Primary teaching responsibilities include direct daily supervision and instruction of students and residents in the Small Animal Dentistry and Oral Surgery service. Other responsibilities include: [1] participation in lectures and laboratories in the DVM professional curriculum; and [2] participation in the graduate clinical (resident) training program of the VMTH.

Professional Competence: The individual will be expected to advance the discipline of Small Animal Dentistry and Oral Surgery within the VMTH, as well as locally through participation and leadership in providing high quality patient care. It is expected that the individual will foster the VMTH reputation for clinical excellence locally and regionally. The successful candidate will maintain clinical competence and strive for recognition of accomplishment in a focused area of clinical practice.

Creative Scholarship: Creative/scholarly activities are required, but in view of the emphasis on clinical service and teaching, the type of scholarly activity may focus primarily on integrating/improving clinical care, conducting clinical research studies, and/or improving veterinary medical education. Faculty are expected to advance the clinical discipline through creation and dissemination of new knowledge with documentation in peer-reviewed publications.

Service: University and public service is expected and may be achieved through committee work, participation in professional organizations, continuing education, and other appropriate means.

Must be eligible for veterinary medical licensing in the State of California (California Business and Professions Code Section 4846-4857). Individuals must obtain a full CA license CA Business and Professions Code Section 4846 or a University license CA Business and Professions Code Section 4848.1 prior to beginning clinical duties.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

DVM or equivalent degree and board certification in the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) and advanced training (fellowship) in oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS).

Documented clinical experience and competence in small animal dentistry and oral/maxillofacial surgery.

Aptitude and experience in or interest in clinical teaching.

A record of creative scholarship.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team environment.

Must be eligible for veterinary medical licensing in the State of California (California Business and Professions Code Section 4846-4857). Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)

Experience with advanced surgical oncology and maxillofacial traumatology.
