Position description
The Department of Cell Biology and Human Anatomy at the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine, seeks to hire one employee as a Junior Specialist in Dr. Fernando Fierro's Lab. This position will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on questions in bone and stem cell biology.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DESIGNATED AREAS OF EXPERTISE
The Junior Specialist has the general duties of working closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) in the planning and execution of research projects. The junior specialist may assist in data collection, entry and quality control, study design and implementation, literature reviews and data analysis for preparation of manuscripts or conference presentations, and writing conference abstracts and manuscripts (e.g., methods and results sections, table, and
figure generation) for a particular project.
The incumbent will work under the supervision of Dr. Fernando Fierro and work cooperatively and collegially in a diverse environment.
Successful candidates are expected to participate in three major categories of activities listed below:
1. RESEARCH (85% EFFORT)
The incumbent will collaborate with other research personnel affiliated with research activities involving studying bone fibrous dysplasia using both cell culture and murine models. The junior specialist will perform technical/routine lab activities required to accomplish the research project(s) in specialized areas. Specific duties may include:
-Isolation, expansion, and experimentation of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs). This includes a set of biochemical and genetic assays.
-Making lentivirus and transducing MSCs to model fibrous dysplasia (FD).
-Testing potential therapeutic compounds for their ability to rescue FD cellular phenotypes.
-Using mouse models of ectopic FD lesions to further elucidate FD development and test potential therapeutic approaches.
This position involves designing and performing experiments, analyzing data and interpreting results, and contributing to the publishing of results in either conferences or scientific manuscripts. This position requires high creative participation in the design, interpretation and publication of findings.
2. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (10% EFFORT)
The appointee will be responsible for presenting findings at one major conference (national or international) and at seminars at UC Davis.
3. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5% EFFORT)
The Junior Specialist may be expected to provide mentorship to undergraduate research assistants that rotate through the lab. They will be expected to participate and contribute to laboratory and group meetings, and other activities, as applicable.
*This recruitment is conducted at the junior rank. The resulting hire will be at the junior rank regardless of the proposed appointee’s qualifications. A reasonable estimate for this position is $53,100 at Step 1 or $56,600 at Step 2.

Qualifications
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree in biology or related fields. Degree must be awarded before start date.
• Minimum 6 months experience in laboratory and/or field research
• Experience using the following methods: culture and experimentation with BMSC, lentivirus manufacturing and transduction, biochemical assays such as measurements of alkaline phosphatase activity, bone mineralization, cell proliferation assays, and ELISAs to measure cAMP or other metabolites and proteins.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Experience with RNA isolation, reverse transcription and real time-PCR.
• Prior experience with basic mice dissection.
