Position description
NATURE AND PURPOSE
The Assistant Project Scientist makes significant and creative contributions to a research or creative project in his/her academic discipline. The appointee possesses the subject matter expertise and the creative energy necessary to function at a high level of competence. The appointee will participate in activities to increase, improve, or upgrade competency. Appointees with Project (e.g., Scientist) titles may engage in University and public service. They do not have teaching responsibilities. Although the Assistant Project Scientist is expected to work independently under the general guidance of an academic member with an independent research program (i.e., Professor, Professional Researcher, Specialist in Cooperative Extension, etc), he/she is not required to develop an independent research program or reputation. He/she will carry out research or creative programs with supervision by an individual in an academic title that carries with it automatic Principal Investigator status. The Assistant Project Scientist does not usually serve as a Principal Investigator but may do so by exception.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
I. RESEARCH (90%)
Research activity (35%)
This position requires creative contributions to and collaborative development of a research program aimed at advancing understanding of the role of dietary interventions, particularly bioactives, on intestinal health and its link to systemic health. The candidate will help to determine research goals in consultation with the Principal Investigator. He/she will design specific experiments and analyses, including the selection of appropriate methods and techniques. The candidate will supervise and train students or technicians regarding the technical aspects of the research, including animal model of pancreatic cancer and metagenomics data generation and analysis. Additionally, the appointee will supervise lab personnel in troubleshooting problems, interpreting results and planning follow-up experiments.
Grant Acquisition (30%)
The candidate will assist in acquiring proposals for funding from federal and state agencies and other funding organizations. The candidate will prepare and assist in the preparation of reports as required by granting agencies. The candidate will interact with funding agencies and prepare modifications of budgets and other grant components as needed.
Publication (25%)
The candidate will publish research results in peer-reviewed journals, books and other outlets either independently or in collaboration with the Pl or other members of the research team.
II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (7%)
The candidate will participate in professional societies and conferences appropriate to nutrition, bioactives, redox biology and genomics fields and will serve as a reviewer of research proposals and scientific publications in these research fields. The appointee will attend trainings to upgrade skillsets related to analytical methods used to measure bioactive/metabolites, molecular modeling, tools to evaluate membrane biophysics, new experimental models to evaluate intestinal function and cancer. The candidate will attend seminars pertaining to intestinal biology, nutrition, polyphenols, redox biology, and related health issues. When appropriate, the candidate may coordinate and/or give presentations at seminars, laboratory meetings or educational functions.
III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (3%)
The candidate will occasionally guest lecture or teach small training seminars.
Qualifications
• Ph.D. in nutrition, biology, food science, or related field
• 5+ years research experience after PhD.
• 5+ years' experience in polyphenol research
• 3+ years of experience in state of the art analytical methods, including UHPLC-(ESI+)-MS/MS, supported by publications in this area.
• 5+ years of research experience in molecular modeling and evaluation of membrane biophysics, supported by publications in this area
• 3+ year experience in cell models of intestinal epithelium, assessment of permeability and cell signaling, redox biology and murine models to assess permeability and nutrient absorption.
• Experience in in vitro colorectal cancer models
• Multiple publications in respected peer-reviewed journals.
• Presented at international conferences.
• Communicates and collaborates well with lab members and colleagues in other labs and at other institutions, including international collaborations
• Experience supervising and training lab personnel.
• Experience troubleshooting and optimizing analytical methods, data generation and integration.
• Experience as manuscript reviewer for respected journals
