Position description
NATURE AND PURPOSE
a. Titles in the Adjunct Professor series may be assigned:
(1) to individuals who are predominantly engaged in research or other creative work and who participate in teaching, or
(2) to individuals who contribute primarily to teaching and have a limited responsibility for research or other creative work; these individuals may be professional practitioners of appropriate distinction. Appointees with titles in this series also engage in University and public service consistent with their assignments.
b. Appointees may serve full-time, part-time, or at 0 percent time.
c. Adjunct Professor titles are intended to be supported primarily by non-State funds. For purposes of this policy, non-State funds are all funds other than General funds (19900-19999).
This position involves predominately research and scholarly activities as well as participation in teaching. The Nutrition department will be compensating for the teaching portion of the appointment, while the research portion of the appointment will be self-funded. It is expected that the candidate will bring funding with them for a 2-year, 100% variable position (depending on funding). The rank and step will be determined by experience. Renewal of this position is contingent on funding being available for the research portion of the appointment.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DESIGNATED AREAS OF EXPERTISE
I. TEACHING AND MENTORING (30% VARIABLE)
This position will participate in the ongoing instruction for the Nutrition undergraduate and graduate courses as well as courses in the Master of Advanced Studies in Maternal and Child Nutrition (MCN) Program. Specifically, the incumbent will serve as the instructor of record or co-instructor of record for one/two podium courses yearly. These courses include NUT105 (Nutrition through the Life Cycle), and/or NUT112 (Nutrition Assessment) but may change as needed. The incumbent will also help facilitate student seminars, and provide occasional lectures in other courses within the department and graduate programs. The incumbent may train and mentor undergraduate and graduate students and serve as a member of graduate groups.
II. RESEARCH AND SCHOLARLY WORK (60% VARIABLE)
The incumbent will conduct an independent research program on projects within their area of expertise in nutrition, specifically mineral metabolism, where they will foster collaboration among Nutrition Department faculty and graduate students. The candidate should have a strong understanding of human zinc metabolism, the limitations of plasma zinc concentration as a biomarker, and put forth an innovative research plan centered around human studies of zinc metabolism, including the development of novel biomarkers of zinc nutriture. They will seek grant funding for these projects, as Adjunct Professors are self-funded for their research. The incumbent will devise and conduct studies to address the key topics described above and other relevant research questions; collect, summarize and analyze data; publish research results in peer-reviewed journals as senior author; prepare reports on research findings and acquire funding to support their research program. Other research duties will include managing the budget and projects according to sound management principles.
III. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5%)
The candidate will provide intellectual leadership and scholarship to their program. The candidate will participate in professional societies, organizations, and conferences appropriate to their specific field. The candidate may give oral presentations to public and professional interest groups, or at seminars, meetings, or educational functions.
IV. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5%)
The candidate will do committee work relevant to the interests and the departmental needs. The candidate will also engage in public outreach activities that include presenting scientific research results to the general public and providing relevant advice to individuals or public agencies
Qualifications
• Ph.D. or equivalent in a field of Nutrition, or closely related field
• Demonstrated ability or potential to obtain extramural support for research activities and self-funding
• Evidence of leadership and organizational skills relevant to the development of a successful research, teaching and outreach program in the discipline of Nutrition.
• Post doctoral experience preferred.
• Evidence of scholarship during graduate and post-graduate activities.
• Interest, understanding, and commitment to contributing to diversity. Demonstrated ability to contribute to diversity and inclusion of groups that are underrepresented in the academy through extension education, research, and/or service would be a plus.
o Statement of Contributions to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will be assessed by their general quality and the candidates’ awareness, contributions, and plans for future efforts related to diversity and inclusion.
• Demonstrated ability or potential to develop and instruct undergraduate and graduate courses and to present information to scientific audiences.
• Willingness and interest to advise undergraduates.
• Demonstrated ability or potential and interest to mentor M.S. and Ph.D. students.
• Evidence of communication skills and collegiality consistent with effective departmental, campus and professional citizenship.
