Position description
The Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis is seeking highly motivated master’s degree or doctorally prepared early career nurse practitioners to serve in a unique role that integrates a primary care transition to practice clinical experience with clinical teaching activities in a structured, guided learning environment. The APP fellow will be part of an accredited 12-month Primary Care Advanced Practice Provider transition to practice fellowship program. APP Fellows – Clinical Instructors must have completed their nurse practitioner program within 18 months of the start of the program on October 1, 2025, (educational program completion cannot be prior to April 1, 2024). The incumbent must be available to complete all hiring paperwork in September which includes in-person appointments at the Sacramento UC Davis Health Campus.
Full time, 12-month positions at the instructor rank in the Health Sciences Clinical Professor (HSCP) Series are available at UC Davis Health, which is located on a modern, 140-acre campus in Sacramento, California. Currently, the position offered is the primary care tract.
This is a 12-month full-time, fully benefited, (at least 40 hours per week) contract position funded by a combination of Health Resources and Services Administration and clinical revenues.
This opportunity is for NPs (family, women’s health, pediatric primary care, psych-mental health, and adult gerontological primary care nurse practitioner applicants only). The program’s goals and those of the grant funders are to increase the number clinicians receiving quality primary care education and training in areas of unmet need throughout the state.
Successful candidates will provide clinical services in contracted community-based clinics, including Federally Qualified Health Centers or UC Davis primary care or nurse-led mobile clinics in the greater Sacramento region, the Sierra foothills, or neighboring counties in Northern California. Additionally, this effort will include an immersive education curriculum with online advanced-learning modules and on-site training at UC Davis Health simulation centers. Teaching requirements, scholarly or creative activity, and professional service expectations will comprise the remaining time.
CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Primary Care APP Fellow – Health Sciences Clinical Instructor will provide primary care services approximately four days per week in the assigned clinic and will participate in educational activities at least one day per week. The APP fellow will also attend educational activities every quarter at the UC Davis Health Campus. The APP fellow will participate in a structured, mentored, accelerated program to develop advanced clinical knowledge, skills, professional behaviors, and practice management for Advanced Practice Providers (APPs). However, this is not a remedial program. The focus of the program is on enhancing advanced clinical knowledge and proficiency, gaining practice management expertise, improving clinical decision-making, and exposure to clinical teaching skills. This appointment will employ a practice-based environment to prepare APPs to care for patients autonomously in a clinical practice environment as well as building teaching skills such as those required for a clinical preceptor, clinical instructor, or clinician educator.
TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES:
As part of this experience and with guidance from experienced faculty and clinicians, the APP Fellow – Health Sciences Clinical Instructor will be responsible for developing a minimum of one clinical education activity for students, nursing staff, or peers, and participating in at least one of the following activities: co-precepting a nurse practitioner or physician assistant student, co-leading clinical skill labs, or facilitating small groups during simulations or case discussions. Teaching activities could also include providing a lecture to students or peers, teaching clinical procedures, providing feedback, and/or assisting with training.
The APP Fellow – Health Sciences Clinical Instructor will also be involved in a limited scholarly activity and limited committee service commensurate with this position.
