Position description

The Graduate School of Management at UC Davis is seeking a dynamic and passionate lecturer to teach a graduate-level course in Data Design & Representation. This course focuses on introducing students to the foundational techniques for extracting, processing, and analyzing various forms of business data, including standard, streaming, and network data. The ideal candidate will have experience in scalable technologies and methodologies for handling large datasets and unstructured data.

The course covers topics such as data extraction (e.g., web scraping), regular expressions, NoSQL databases, and approaches to structuring and organizing data for business applications. While teaching experience is preferred, it is not a requirement. Candidates should, however, demonstrate strong communication skills and an ability to explain technical concepts to students with diverse academic backgrounds. Instructor is expected to be able to deliver course materials using Python.

Course Description:

This course provides an introduction to extracting, processing, and structuring unstructured data for business applications. Students will learn practical skills for working with various data types, focusing on tools like regular expressions, web scraping, and JSON (JavaScript Object Notation). The course also helps students build solutions for real-world business problems. Throughout the course, students will participate in individual and group projects, applying data wrangling techniques and preparing datasets for business decision-making. By the end of the course, students will be equipped to tackle complex data problems, sourcing and organizing information to drive business value.

Responsibilities:

Teach graduate students the fundamentals of data design and representation.
Develop and deliver lectures, practical exercises, and hands-on projects.
Guide students through real-world applications of data extraction and processing.
Foster an inclusive, engaging, and dynamic learning environment.
Stay current with emerging trends and technologies in big data and business applications.

Unit 18 Lecturers are governed under a collective bargaining agreement (American Federation of Teachers (AFT) - Non-Senate Instructional Unit).

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Advanced degree in data science, computer science, business analytics, or a related field.
Experience with big data technologies, data extraction methods, and/or scalable data solutions.
Strong knowledge of programming languages (e.g., Python, Java) and tools for data processing.
Ability to communicate complex topics in an accessible manner to non-technical audiences.
A commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive classroom experience.
