Position description
NATURE AND PURPOSE
The Project Scientist makes significant and creative contributions to a research or creative project in his/her academic discipline. The appointee possesses the subject matter expertise and the creative energy necessary to function at a high level of competence. The appointee will participate in activities to increase, improve, or upgrade competency. Appointees with Project (e.g., Scientist) titles may engage in University and public service. They do not have teaching responsibilities. Although the Project Scientist is expected to work independently under the general guidance of an academic member with an independent research program (i.e., Professor, Professional Researcher, Specialist in Cooperative Extension, etc), he/she is not required to develop an independent research program or reputation. He/she will carry out research or creative programs with supervision by an individual in an academic title that carries with it automatic Principal Investigator status. The Project Scientist does not usually serve as a Principal Investigator but may do so by exception.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
I. RESEARCH (90%)
Research activity (35%)
This position requires creative contributions to and collaborative development of a research program aimed at advancing understanding of the role of dietary interventions on pancreatic cancer growth and of novel preventive and treatment strategies against pancreatic cancer. The candidate will help to determine research goals in consultation with the Principal Investigator. He/she will design specific experiments and analyses, including the selection of appropriate methods and techniques. The candidate will mentor and/or train students or technicians regarding the technical aspects of the research, including animal model of pancreatic cancer and metagenomics data generation and analysis. Additionally, the appointee will supervise lab personnel in troubleshooting problems, interpreting results and planning follow-up experiments.
Grant Acquisition (30%)
The candidate will assist in acquiring proposals for funding from federal and state agencies and other funding organizations. The candidate will prepare and assist in the preparation of reports as required by granting agencies. The candidate will interact with funding agencies and prepare modifications of budgets and other grant components as needed.
Publication (25%)
The candidate will publish research results in peer-reviewed journals, books and other outlets either independently or in collaboration with the Pl or other members of the research team.
II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (7%)
The candidate will participate in professional societies and conferences appropriate to nutrition, pancreatic cancer metabolism and genomics fields and will serve as a reviewer of research proposals and scientific publications in these research fields. The appointee will attend trainings to upgrade skillsets related to pancreatic cancer and genomics data generation and analysis, and omics data integration. The candidate will attend seminars pertaining to cancer biology, nutrition, and novel preventive and treatment strategies. When appropriate, the candidate may coordinate and/or give presentations at seminars, laboratory meetings or educational functions.
III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (3%)
The candidate will occasionally guest lecture or teach small training seminars.
Qualifications
• Ph.D. in nutrition, biology, cancer biology or related field
• 5+ years research experience after PhD.
• 1+ years' experience in pancreatic cancer research
• 5+ years of experience in omics (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics) and bioinformatics analysis, data integration and visualization of derived high-throughput molecular data supported by publications in this area
• Must possess 1+ year experience in pancreatic cancer animal models including generation of orthotopic animal models and genetic animal models (KC and KPC mice)
• 1+ year experience in murine animal work including animal handling, husbandry (breeding colonies), drug administration methods (i.p, i.v, s.c.), blood collection techniques (submandibular blood collection, cardiac puncture), necropsies, survival surgeries, experience in evaluation of tumor growth by bioluminescence imaging, experience in flow cytometry
• Experience in conducting dietary interventional preclinical trials
• Experience in clinical trial conduction and management
• Experience in in vitro pancreatic cancer models
• Multiple publications in peer-reviewed journals.
• Presented at international conferences.
• Communicates and collaborates well with lab members and colleagues in other labs and at other institutions, including international collaborations
• Experience supervising and training lab personnel.
• Experience troubleshooting and optimizing methods for omics (transcriptomics, genomics, proteomics,) data generation and integration.
