Position description

NATURE AND PURPOSE

The position of Junior Specialist has a focus in a specialized area and provides technical or specialized expertise in the planning and execution of research projects. The Junior Specialist stays apprised of the research area and maintains technical competence in the designated area(s) of specialization. .

In general, it is inappropriate to appoint an individual with a Master’s or doctoral degree in the relevant discipline or a baccalaureate degree plus three or more years of experience with the specialized methods as a Junior Specialist.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

At the Western Human Nutrition Research Center, administratively housed in the Nutrition Department, researchers conduct a variety of studies of nutrition involving human participants. The Junior Specialist is engaged in research under the mentorship of experienced faculty researchers, dietitians, and post-doctoral scholars. The Junior Specialist is actively and significantly involved in research data collection, data summary and quality assurance using REDCap, dietary assessment using a variety of traditional and novel tools, physical activity monitoring, planning, preparing and educating participants regarding diet interventions. The Junior Specialist will be working on the NIH funded All of Us, Nutrition for Precision Health research study.

RESEARCH IN SPECIALIZED AREAS (90%)

a. The Junior Specialist position will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on questions in nutrition, dietetics, dietary assessment, and food service management in the context of controlled human nutrition research studies.
b. The Junior Specialist will use their educational background in Clinical Nutrition to collect, process, analyze, and interpret dietary and food pattern data using specialized software (e.g., ASA24, ProNutra, Nutrition Data System for Research (NDSR), REDCap, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Access), and work on complex problems related to data integration between systems.
c. The Junior Specialist will follow the procedures found in the Manual of Operations (MOP) and will participate in the revising of study protocols on an as needed basis.
d. General responsibilities of the Junior Specialist include the following: human nutrition research study support, dietary analysis, and data management.

PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5%)

a. The Junior Specialist will be actively involved in surveying literature, reviewing journal articles, and engaging in discussions on research.
b. The Junior Specialist may participate in appropriate professional meetings in the All of Us, Nutrition for Precision Health consortium, and may contribute to published abstracts and manuscripts.

UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5%)

a. The Junior Specialist may participate in activities of committees within the WHNRC and mentor undergraduate student interns, as appropriate.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

• Bachelor degree in Clinical Nutrition, Nutrition Science or a related field with a minimum of one-year experience in undergraduate laboratory research.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

• CITI Human Subjects Protection training
• REDCap training

Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)

• One year work experience involving research utlitzing multiple approaches to dietary assessment.
• Experience working with human participants in dietary intervention style clinical trials.
