Position description

The Funk Lab is seeking an individual to assist with multiple field experiments that survey the response of native bunchgrasses to fire and invasion by non-native species. The role involves data collection on plant survival, growth, and physiology in the field, analysis of plant tissue in the laboratory, data entry, and performing basic statistical analyses. The employee will drive to and lodge at field stations, camping sites, and other lodgings to conduct research for up to one week. Unless there are exceptional circumstances (i.e. weather or gear carrying requirements), the employee will use their own vehicle and be reimbursed at the standard IRS rate. Additionally, the position includes providing guidance to undergraduate students and participating in lab meetings and discussions to enhance professional competence in written communication and statistical methods.

Per UCD-APM 330, it is inappropriate to appoint an individual with a Master's or Doctoral degree in the relevant discipline or a baccalaureate degree plus three or more years of experience as a Junior Specialist. Candidates who hold a Masters or Doctoral degree will be disqualified from this search.

I. RESEARCH IN SPECIALIZED AREAS (80% EFFORT)
A. Collaborate with other research personnel on field, lab, and greenhouse experiments examining how California grassland species respond to fire, drought, and invasion by non-native grasses.
B. The employee will collect survival, growth, and physiology data in the field, process plant tissue in the laboratory, maintain greenhouse plants, enter data into spreadsheets, and conduct basic statistical tests.
C. The employee will drive to and lodge at field stations, camping sites, and other lodgings to conduct research for up to one week. The main field site is a 2hr drive from Davis and the two other field sites are up to a 6hr drive from Davis. Unless there are exceptional circumstances (i.e. weather or gear carrying requirements), the employee will use their own vehicle and be reimbursed at the standard IRS rate (currently $0.67/mile). The employee may be asked to transport others to the field sites.
D. The employee will work with the PI and graduate students to troubleshoot methods and implement new protocols. Work hours may include weekends, evenings, and early mornings when required by research activities.
E. Physical requirements for work include bending, crouching, kneeling, lifting and carrying up to 20 pounds, walking on uneven surfaces, and walking for 1-5 miles per day. Work conditions may include heat, cold, rain, full sun, and smoke.
E. Evaluation of performance in research activities will be documented by the following:
1) Formal documentation by project personnel of intellectual effort and participation in publishable research activities.
2) Active discussion and dissemination of information with project personnel in small groups and lab meetings.
F. Coordinate and schedule research activities among lab members and collaborators.

II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (10% EFFORT)
A. Participate in training (informal or formal) for written communication and statistical methods.
B. Work collaboratively with project personnel, including faculty, postdoctoral scholars, and graduate students.

III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (10% EFFORT)
A. Assist with lab oversight and maintenance including organizing and ordering lab supplies and setting-up equipment.
B. Provide safety training for all lab members.
C. C. Mentor undergraduate researchers.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

A. Bachelors’ degree in ecology, plant sciences, biology, or related field (must be obtained at the time of appointment)
B. Drivers license and ability to drive to remote field sites
C. Excellent oral and written communication skills
D. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
E. Experience as a team member in a diverse academic setting, including working with others to troubleshoot experimental or computational approaches

Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)

F. One year or more of research experience
G. Proficient in data entry, Excel, and R programming
H. Field experience required including species surveys and monitoring of abiotic factors
