Salary range: INTERNAL RECRUITMENT TO UC DAVIS ONLY - The Popper Endowed Chair provides additional funding to a current UC Davis academic appointee in the professorial series. The additional funding may support the endowed chair holder in areas of performance of an opera or a portion of an opera directly related to the purpose of the endowment.

Jan and Beta Popper Endowed Professorship in Opera

This position is open to all UC Davis Professors of Music at the rank of Associate Professor and higher

INTERNAL ONLY

The University of California, Davis invites applications for the Jan and Beta Popper Endowed Chair in Opera, to begin July 1, 2024. The holder of this endowed chair will be a distinguished professor of music whose teaching and research/creative work includes opera and other fields of music. This holder of this professorship must be a highly regarded musicologist, ethnomusicologist or composer whose work is known nationally and internationally. As a recognized leader in her or his field, the holder of this professorship would be expected to pursue original research resulting in articles and books or creative work resulting in musical compositions; to participate in national and international conferences and performances; and to take a leadership role at UC Davis in fostering the field of opera as part of the larger world of musical research and composition.

The term of the endowed chair is for four years, with the possibility of reappointment at the discretion of the Chancellor per regularly established University procedures for endowed chair/professorship appointments (APM 191, UCD 191).

The endowment income will support the professor’s research/creative work, teaching and service, and further the mission of the Department of Music and the campus. The income may also be used to help subsidize a performance of an opera or a portion of an opera.

The responsibilities of the chair include engaging in scholarly/creative work that includes opera as a field of music; teach in both undergraduate and graduate programs, consistent with departmental teaching policies; provide leadership in the field of opera, and be fully engaged in the activities of the Department of Music; and to enhance the intellectual/creative life of the campus as a whole.
