Position description

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of California, Davis invites applications for a qualified Junior Specialist for the Talbott Lab.

This position will be involved in research studies related to infant and toddler development, autism, and telehealth. Primary projects involve longitudinal studies of infants with early developmental concerns, including the adaptation and evaluation of remote behavioral assessment strategies. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to contribute to research projects and products including preparation of conference submissions, presentations, and/or manuscripts.

MAJOR RESPONSIBLITIES

The incumbent for this position will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on questions in implementation science and use of evidence-based autism intervention.

Responsibilities include recruitment, coordination of study visits, data collection, tracking, and entry, behavioral coding and supervision of coding teams, assistance with tracking and preparing IRB submissions, funding progress reports, and preparation of data for dissemination activities (including submissions to conferences). The incumbent will assist with preparation of manuscripts and grant submissions directly related to these projects.

General responsibilities include:

I. RESEARCH ACTIVITY (80% EFFORT)

  • Specific research and technical activities include behavioral coding and supervision of coding teams, study recruitment and visit coordination, including monitoring study progress and adherence to study timelines. Support maintenance of databases and track data collection for ongoing studies including video tracking and coding and distribution of online questionnaires. Assist with IRB applications, renewals, and progress reports for funding agencies.
  • Specific duties: The incumbent will be involved in the entire research pipeline across multiple projects. They will help to plan data collection procedures, assist with data collection of multiple types (telehealth sessions, online surveys, focus groups/interviews, and behavioral coding), report study progress both formally (assist with progress reports to funders) and informally (present at lab/group meetings). The incumbent will also lead coding teams, which involves video tracking, coder tracking and ensuring reliability of data coding. The incumbent will have the opportunity to assist with data preparation and analysis for presentations at conferences and to contribute to manuscripts by reviewing and summarizing the relevant literature, assisting with preparation of data for analysis, and may contribute to writing relevant sections.

II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (15% EFFORT)

  • Specific professional activities: The incumbent is expected to gain professional competence by participating in educational seminars and other professional development opportunities available at the MIND Institute. They will participate in regular project and laboratory-wide meetings, where they will occasionally present on their research activities. They will help to review written materials of direct relevance to the current projects, under the supervision of the Principal Investigators. This may include reviewing manuscript submissions and research proposals.

III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5% EFFORT)

  • Specific service activities include participation on committees within the MIND and/or the laboratory. Incumbent may occasionally liaise with external organizations in the field of intervention, health equity, and/or educational policies.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • Bachelor’s degree in 1) Psychology; 2)Human Development; or 3) Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior (NPB), or a related field by Spring 2024 with a minimum of 1 year experience in autism research.
  • Willingness to commit to at least one year of employment (two is preferred).
  • Experience with research tracking and data entry procedures and databases (e.g. REDCap), behavioral and qualitative coding methods and software systems (e.g. BORIS, Dedoose).
  • Experience with behavioral coding of social communication behaviors in infants and toddlers.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain participant confidentiality and work collaboratively with a diverse team.
  • Some experience with scientific writing (e.g. posters, papers, grants, policy-related documents, or other related materials. This may be mentored or through coursework.
Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)
  • Experience in screening, recruitment, scheduling, processing participant payments, creating and distributing study materials, and/or other related study coordination activities.
  • Basic computer skills and experience with productivity software (e.g. email management, task tracking, word and spreadsheet software).
