Position description

The Department of Neurology at the University of California Davis, School of Medicine is recruiting for a Junior Specialist.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DESIGNATED AREAS OF EXPERTISE
This a part time position under the direction of the study PI and supervised by the Director of Clinical Research within the UC Davis Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center. This position serves a junior specialist for studies funded by the National Institutes of Health and CITRIS Banatao Institute. Studies focus on developing and evaluating integrative software and hardware technologies focused on promoting independence in and remote caregiving of individuals with early Alzheimer’s disease.
In addition to developing innovative compensatory technology, a primary goal of this research is to create and test behavioral interventions focused on enhancing technology use and adherence while addressing barriers. Following the study protocol and strictly adhering to IRB and HIPAA regulations, the incumbent will assist with recruitment and will complete all screening of potential participants. Under the direction and advisement of the PI, they will also be responsible for developing research materials, conducting focus group sessions, testing/evaluating technology, training participants, and obtaining outcome measures including questionnaires.

The incumbent will assist with preparing manuscripts for publications, in collaboration with her/his direct supervisor. Manuscript preparation by the candidate will include reviewing the relevant literature and summarizing these reviews in the introduction, describing results and methods used to acquire the results, constructing clear and informative figures, and formatting manuscripts to align with APA guidelines. This person will also schedule participant appointments and organize and maintain lab materials. Finally, they will be involved in data entry and management.

The incumbent will work under the supervision of Dr. Alyssa Weakley and the ability to work cooperatively and collegially in a diverse environment.

I. RESEARCH (90% Effort)

A. Research Coordination and Support (50%)
• Develops research materials such as workbooks.
• Screens subjects prior to study visits.
• Schedules study visits.
• Consents subjects for research protocols by following established policies and procedures. Obtains signatures and documents outcome.
• Explains research studies in accordance with IRB and HIPAA guidelines.
• Performs designated study procedures (e.g., train participants how to use web app) according to the sponsor's protocol.
• Collects questionnaires.
• Actively contribute to publishable research by reviewing and writing summaries of the literature.
• Conducts focus groups and intervention development sessions.
• Completes regulatory research training requirements as prescribed.
• Attends and takes notes during study meetings.
• Organizes and maintains study materials.
• Meets with and tracks web-developers’ progress.
• Tests technology usability.

B. Outreach and Recruitment (20%)
• Manage recruitment efforts including the development of recruitment materials, providing IRB approved documents to potential subjects and participating in public events for recruitment of potential study participants.
• Tracks and documents recruitment procedures
• Create and maintain UCD Study Pages listing.

C. Data Management (20%)
• Designs/develops database.
• Enters Data.
• Manages electronic records of protocols and other data sources.

II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE (5% Effort)
• Participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations.
• Review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications related to area of expertise.

III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5% Effort)
The Junior Specialist may be expected to provide mentorship to undergraduate research assistants that rotate through the lab. They will be expected to participate and contribute to laboratory and group meetings, committee service, and other activities, as applicable.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

• Bachelors degree in psychology.
• Basic knowledge of research data collection and storage procedures.
• Comfort with working with cognitively impaired individuals and family member caregivers.
• Experience with providing trainings in people’s homes.
• Knowledge of safety and security measures when conducting research/training in people’s homes.
• Knowledge of psychological and medical terminology.
• Strong oral and written communication skills to record observations.
• Able to establish good rapport with patients and caregivers.
• Able to show sensitivity to the needs of patients with cognitive impairment and their caregivers.
• Able to perform focus groups or trainings for long periods of time (2-3 hours).
• Able to work in a team environment and independently.
• Able to prioritize and organize work responsibilities.
• Demonstrated flexibility with changing priorities, work environment, and schedules.
• Takes initiative to accomplish tasks and completes duties as assigned.
• Detail oriented.
• Able to use computer systems and software applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Willingness to learn and engage with new technology and software.
