Position description

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of California Davis invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow to be effective 9/1/2024. This position is part of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Sawyer Seminar on Thinking Food @ the Intersections: Justice and Critical Food Studies grant at UC Davis. Thinking Food @ the Intersections will facilitate a space for cross-disciplinary dialogue and collaboration aimed at generating innovative approaches to food justice. Through a trans-temporal approach that engages intersections between scholarship, activism, food practice, and art, our seminar will explore food justice as a longstanding struggle with deep roots and an exciting as well as challenging future.

This is a two-year 100% full-time position with an annual salary of $64,480 plus UC Davis benefits to include medical, dental, vision, life, AD&D, short term disability, and voluntary long-term disability.

Successful candidates will hold a PhD in the Humanities or Humanistic Social Sciences and is required by September 1, 2024. Candidates should have a strong research agenda concerned with Food Studies, Social Justice, and/or Food Sustainability as well as experience with project management and event planning. Experience in public and / or digital humanities is welcome but not required.

The postdoctoral fellow’s role will be to (1) assist the faculty Principal Investigator (PI) and other planning committee members in administering the seminar, (2) supervise two graduate student employees, and (3) participate in the scholarly work of the seminar. Administrative responsibilities will include overall project management, acting as internal and external communication lead, and generating and coordinating open-access digital content related to the seminar. Participation in the scholarly work of the seminar will include attending and contributing to the seminar, contributing to any publications emerging from the initiative, and participating in quarterly events for UC Davis faculty, grad students and postdocs that will take place between seminar events to build and sustain scholarly community. The fellow will also be expected to maintain their own research and writing program, and will benefit from research support and mentorship from the planning committee and broader interdisciplinary community of scholars generated by the seminar.
