Position description

The Department of Physiology & Membrane Biology at the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine, seeks to hire 1 employee as a Junior Specialist in Dr. Clancy’s lab. This position will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on questions in the application of digital twins to biomedical research in the area of cardiac and vascular physiology and pathophysiology.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DESIGNATED AREAS OF EXPERTISE
The Junior Specialist has the general duties of working closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) in the planning and execution of research projects. The junior specialist may assist in data collection, entry and quality control, study design and implementation, literature reviews and data analysis for preparation of manuscripts or conference presentations, and writing conference abstracts and manuscripts (e.g., methods and results sections, table, and
and figure generation) for a particular project.

The incumbent will work under the supervision of Dr. Colleen Clancy and work cooperatively and collegially in a diverse environment.

1. RESEARCH (90% EFFORT)
The candidate will contribute to ongoing research projects in the lab by developing signaling models and associated tools and will be expected to contribute to publishable research activities. The candidate will contribute to the development of new tools and carry out analysis of existing computational models. The candidate will assist in the study design collecting and interpreting data and revising plans for future modeling studies. The candidate will carry out a determination of the right approach to signaling models by creatively assessing the efficacy of previously published studies in comparison to new models. The candidate will assist with the writing and editing of manuscripts to which they contribute – the candidate should expect to write the sections that they oversaw in their project. They will review journal manuscripts related to cardiovascular modeling and precision medicine.

2. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5% EFFORT)
The appointee will be expected to actively participate in the dissemination of information at the relevant NIH meetings and the Biophysical Society meetings, participate and contribute to departmental and other seminars, journal clubs and other activities, as applicable.

3. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5% EFFORT)
The Junior Specialist may be expected to provide mentorship to undergraduate research assistants that rotate through the lab. They will be expected to participate and contribute to laboratory and group meetings, and other activities, as applicable.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree in Biology or related field. Degree must be awarded before start date.
• Minimum two years of experience in laboratory research that involves computational modeling and simulation
• Experience using specific research methods techniques including modeling and simulation of cell signaling pathways.

Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Experience using specific research methods techniques including coding in C and MATLAB.
