Position description

The Office for Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and the UC Davis School of Medicine Dean’s Office are recruiting for an Interim Associate Dean for the Office of Student and Resident Diversity (OSRD). The Interim Associate Dean-OSRD is an essential member of the School of Medicine’s leadership team, reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion with dotted line reporting to the Vice Dean for Medical Education in the School of Medicine.

The incumbent will have up to 40% effort in administrative responsibilities as Interim Associate Dean for the Office of Student and Resident Diversity, while maintaining up to 60% effort and responsibilities in research, clinical, and/or teaching duties as a full-time faculty member in an Academic series (Regular, In Residence, Clinical X, Health Sciences Clinical, or Adjunct Professor) at the high Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level in the appropriate academic department in the UC Davis School of Medicine.

Please note: The selected candidate for this Interim Associate Dean position will be ineligible to apply for the permanent Associate Dean position. Also, the Interim Associate Dean appointment is time limited and is anticipated for a 12–18–month appointment term, or until the permanent position is filled. This is not a Change in Title opportunity. The salary is based on the current faculty appointment and the Interim Associate Dean role will include an additional $10,000 annual stipend.

The Interim Associate Dean-OSRD provides leadership to build a diverse and welcoming learning environment and culture, infuse belonging and inclusion efforts in all aspects of student experiences, and attend to issues of intersectionality within and among students. Success in this area requires attention to integrating and ensuring that there are relevant learning environments for diverse students, residents and fellows as well as identifying opportunities for interprofessional collaborations between diverse student groups in both the School of Medicine and School of Nursing to better serve our patients and communities.

The Interim Associate Dean-OSRD functions as a collaborative colleague with the administrative leadership team of the Office of Medical Education and the School of Nursing Associate Dean for Health Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.

The Interim Associate Dean provides leadership to a range of administrative, academic, and technical professionals in the Office of Student and Resident Diversity who provide comprehensive student support services.

The Interim Associate Dean will serve:

  • as a member of the Office for Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Senior Leadership Group and the School of Medicine Education Dean’s Council.
  • as a representative on the Student Affairs Committee, in partnership with the Associate Dean of Students, as an advocate and support person for students, especially those with academic or professionalism actions.
  • as a leadership advisor to the Student Diversity Advisory Council (DAC) and a liaison between DAC and the Schools of Health administrative leadership team.
  • as a liaison to the Committee on Student Promotions (CSP) for actions that involve medical students.
  • as a representative of the UC Davis Health leadership team at medical student and trainee events, especially for those related to students and trainees that are under-represented and/or from disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • as a lead and collaborator on student-driven and departmental events related to diversity and inclusion initiatives.
  • in partnership with Medical Education Deans, participate in workgroups and committees related to educational policy and curriculum providing a lens focused on diversity, health equity, and inclusion.
  • as a member of the School of Medicine Admissions Committee, supporting the review and selection process for UC Davis School of Medicine medical students.
  • to support and mentor pre-health students as they pursue professional school admittance, especially nursing and medicine.
  • to provide oversight for the Office of Student and Resident Diversity pathway programs including: K12 Outreach; Medical School Preparatory Enhancement Program; UC Davis Pre-Health Conference; Post-baccalaureate Program.
  • as a leader, partner, and School of Medicine representative in the LCME accreditation process, specifically to ensure compliance in the diversity and inclusion LCME content.
  • as a representative of the Office for Student and Resident Diversity on local, regional and national committees for medical students, residents and fellows; and
  • as a member of the School of Medicine Learning Climate Committee.
  • as a partner with the Associate Dean for Students in tracking and providing an annual report on cultural mistreatment, such as microaggressions, blatant racist acts, and racist sentiments that negatively impact the learning environment.

The Interim Associate Dean collaborates with faculty, students, trainees, and administration to promote a safe and inclusive learning environment for trainees, to instruct workshops and lectures that promote equity and inclusion in medical education, support timely response to emerging issues on behalf of trainees from under-represented and disadvantaged backgrounds, and contribute to the recruitment efforts of applicants from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds. The Interim Associate Dean collaborates to advance the culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion to reinforce our aspirational goals of equity in all aspects of education, science and healthcare.

As an academic faculty member, responsibilities include clinical service, in applicable area of specialty; teaching of medical students, residents, and fellows; conducting and producing scholarly work, clinical/translational research; a record of peer-reviewed publications; success in obtaining extramural funding, as applicable; and University service. All responsibilities will be further determined based on faculty series.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Basic qualifications:
The candidate must have earned a terminal degree in a relevant field; be an active academic faculty member and in good standing in the UC Davis School of Medicine at the high Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level; at least three years of experience in leading efforts that bring diverse communities together; administrative leadership experience at an academic institution; demonstrate commitment to the value of diversity, equity and inclusion; possess effective communication skills; and have the ability to represent the School of Medicine at the local, state, national, and international levels.

Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)

The preferred candidate will have knowledge and experience in the use of effective strategies to promote inter-professional education, educational scholarship, an appreciation of rapidly evolving trends in health systems science, and patient-centered care and a commitment to educating and supporting students and trainees that are from under-represented and/or disadvantaged backgrounds.
