Position description

We seek a highly skilled and motivated individual to join us as a full-time Predoctoral Fellow serving as a Junior Specialist. The position will entail close collaboration with and assistance to Professor Travis Lybbert. This is a one-year position with the possibility of renewal for a second year. The position involves responsibilities that serve as excellent preparation for Ph.D. programs in economics, including data processing and analysis, survey design, literature reviews, and presentations.

Specific Responsibilities:
Research (85%):

  • Provide scientific and technical analysis in support of the planning, implementation and monitoring of the work with the Standing Panel on Impact Assessment (SPIA)
  • Conduct literature reviews and other background analysis to support research design and planning
  • Draft /co-authoring blog posts or other commentaries related to impact assessments

Professional Competence (15%):

  • Engage with the broader SPIA team and researchers both inside and outside the CGIAR, including at meetings and conferences

  • Service is not required

Position Requirements:
This position requires a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in Economics or related field, at time of appointment. Training in statistics and econometrics is required.

Please note: In general, it is inappropriate to appoint an individual as a Junior Specialist if they have a Master’s degree or doctoral degree in the relevant discipline.

Preferred Position Requirements:
• 1-2 years experience conducting empirical research, including contributing to data collection and cleaning activities
• 1-2 years experience and competency with statistical software packages such as STATA, R, and ability to render accurate statistical analysis
• Ability to read and analyze published papers in economics, and accurately understand their main results
• Ability to independently investigate solutions to technical and administrative problems
• Outstanding written and oral communication skills, with the ability to translate complex scientific findings into accessible, non-technical language (via publications or professional presentations)
• Ability to work well with multi-national teams, and communicate effectively with colleagues and faculty
• Strong interest in development economics, causal inference in applied microeconometrics, research design and/or program evaluation.
