Position description

Clinical: The position includes a 70% (Professor of Clinical track) or 90% (Health Sciences Clinical Professor track) clinical effort to the Equine Surgical Emergency and Critical Care Service of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH). Individual will be responsible for directing, instructing, and supervising veterinary students and residents; providing health care and service to patients; and advising and consulting with referring veterinarians and clients.
Teaching: The primary teaching responsibility will be direct daily supervision and instruction of senior DVM students and residents rotating through the Equine Surgical Emergency and Critical Care Service. Other responsibilities may include: 1) participation in lectures and laboratories in the DVM professional curriculum; 2) clinical teaching in the VMTH; and 3) participation in all aspects of the didactic and clinical (resident) training program of the VMTH.
Professional Competence: Advance the discipline within the VMTH, as well as locally and nationally, through participation and leadership in providing high quality patient care in the hospital environment. Expected to establish reputation for clinical excellence locally, regionally and nationally, depending upon level of appointment. Must demonstrate clinical competence and be recognized for accomplishment in a focused area of clinical practice.
Creative Scholarship: Faculty in the Professor of Clinical track are expected to advance the clinical discipline through creation and dissemination of new knowledge with documentation in peer-reviewed publications. Creative/scholarly activities are required for the Health Sciences Clinical Professor track, but scholarship is typically derived directly from primary clinical responsibilities and does not require peer-reviewed publications.
Service: University and public service through committee work, participation in professional organizations, continuing education and other appropriate means is required.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Veterinarian with advanced training in equine surgery. Clinical experience and competence in equine surgical emergency and critical care is required. Certification or eligibility by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons or the European College of Veterinary Surgeons is required. Candidates must be eligible for board examination in 2024 and are expected to achieve board certification within 2 years. Demonstrated aptitude/experience in teaching, particularly clinical teaching, is required. Documented record of creative scholarship or potential to develop a clinical research program in some aspect of clinical equine surgical emergency and critical care or education is required. Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere.
Must be eligible for veterinary medical licensing in the State of California (California Business and Professions Code Section 4846-4857). Individuals must obtain a full CA license (California Business and Professions Code Section 4846) or a University license (California Business and Professions Code Section 4848.1) prior to beginning clinical duties.

Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)

Certification or eligibility for certification by the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care is preferred but not required.
