Position description

The Department of Surgery in the School of Medicine invites applicants for a faculty position at the Assistant Professor rank (Split appointment in the Ladder rank and In-Residence series). We seek an outstanding candidate with a strong translational research background in the development of new technologies and strategies that can advance our basic understanding of fetal tissue regeneration, especially fetal bone formation in the context of spina bifida and other birth defects.

We are seeking a candidate who also has background with MSC engineering that aligns well with our institutional Cell and Gene Therapy initiative, and support for the Center for Surgical Bioengineering's innovation and translation focused work. The candidate will be expected to develop an independent, extramurally funded research program at the frontier of fetal tissue engineering and stem cell technology and to contribute to the teaching mission of the University in the School of Medicine.

Applicants must be capable of teaching core undergraduate and graduate courses, be willing to contribute to an innovative multidisciplinary curriculum in the field of biomedical engineering, and eager to mentor graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and medical residents. Research activities will be housed in the Center for Surgical Bioengineering.

UC Davis has a vibrant research community focused on aspects of fetal and pediatric disease and disorder diagnosis and treatment. The Department of Surgery is an active participant in this community. We are interested in scholars with strong records of innovative investigation that would complement and leverage these existing programs as well as others in the UC Davis School of Medicine.

The UC Davis Medical Center is a comprehensive academic medical center where clinical practice, teaching and research converge to advance human health. The Department of Surgery is nationally ranked in U.S. News & World Report and have vibrant research programs in a broad ranges of areas that complement surgical bioengineering technology including cell and tissue engineering, computational and synthetic biology, biomaterials and devices, biomechanics and mechanobiology, and biophotonics and biomedical imaging.

As one of the country’s leading R1 institutions, UC Davis seeks candidates with exceptional potential for and record of professional and/or scholarly achievement and activity, teaching, and inclusive excellence. In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding of the barriers preventing full participation of members from historically underrepresented and marginalized student communities in higher education.

Applicants’ track record of engagement and activity related to diversity, equal opportunity, and inclusion as well as their plans for future engagement will be a significant part of the overall evaluation of the candidate’s qualifications for a faculty appointment. This recruitment is conducted at the assistant rank. The resulting hire will be at the assistant rank, regardless of the proposed appointee's qualifications.
