Position description

The Department of Dermatology at the University of California, Davis invites applications for multiple qualified Junior Specialists positions. As a Junior Specialist, the candidates will assume responsibilities in assisting and conducting translational research under the direction of Dr. Emanual Maverakis.
Research in Specialized Areas (85% EFFORT)
The laboratory of Dr Emanual Maverakis’ research team conducts cutting edge clinical trials and is responsible for coordinating the basic science ancillary studies for many of the ongoing trials of the UC Davis Cancer Center. Dr Maverakis is the director of the UC Davis Immune Monitoring Core, a state of the are facility equipped with an Illumina next generation DNA sequencer, Bio-Rad Bio-Plex array ready among other instruments. In addition, Dr Maverakis’ research group is funded by numerous groups for the purpose of conducting basic science. The incumbent in this position will
contribute to translational and basic science research projects by:
• Providing and coordinating clinical studies that may involve industry sponsored Phase I, II, III, and IV clinical trials and investigator initiated (government-funded) translational studies.
• Prepare documents for submission to the IRB
• Communicate with sponsors
• Recruit and screen study participants
• Coordinate participant clinical visits, and follow-up care, and ensure compliance with study protocols
• Assist in all activities related to clinical trials and translational research.
• Run assays as part of the Immune Monitoring Core and Maverakis Lab Research, including but not limited to multi-plex analyte detection, cell culture, next generation sequencing, and quantitative real- time PCR.
General Responsibilities:
-Manage datasets, records, and research documentation.
-Educate and mentor volunteer and students in the laboratory as required. Such as allowing them to shadow you while performing experiments.
-Establish and maintain animal cell culture lines using sterile techniques.
-Prepare sterile media/reagents and maintain sterile facilities.
-Update/modify standard laboratory procedures to fulfill the needs of each research project.
Professional Competence and Activity (10% EFFORT)
-Participate in appropriate professional/technical groups and other educational and research organizations. For example, attend and present at the UC Davis Epithelial Biology Club, attend UC Davis Department of Dermatology Grand Rounds, attend one national conference either the Society of Investigative Dermatology annual meeting, the American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting, or the American Association of Immunologists Annual Meeting.
-Participate in publication of research activities such as reviewing journal articles and presentation.
-Develop and submit publications including abstracts and manuscripts.
-Attend and present at local and national research meetings.
University and Public Service (5% EFFORT)
-Participate in activities of Lab Safety Committee (Departmental)
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences, or related field
Able to compile, understand, and interpret data
Ability to work cooperatively within a diverse environment
1 year of laboratory experience (required)
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of IRB and clinical trials preferred
Step 1 $19.50 per hour- [100%] or Step II - $20.79 per hour [100%], Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
This position is open effective November 29, 2019 with an initial review date of December 13, 2019. The position will close on June 30, 2020.
Short term, seasonal appointment based on the needs of the research project. Appointments may be made up to 100%.
