Junior Specialist, Step I

Title: Junior Specialist (Step I) position for the Genomic Medicine Division

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of California, Davis invites applications for one qualified Junior Specialist position (Step 1) in Genomic Medicine. This full time (100%) position will be under the direct supervision of Dr. Katherine Rauen.

General responsibilities include:
This position’s responsibility is to coordinate genomic medicine clinical research studies. Specific duties include contacting patients/patient families who are affected by genomic disorders, scheduling assessments with various clinicians and researchers, creating and maintaining patient charts and databases, organizing and entering data, and contributing to ongoing scholarly activity within the division.

Additional tasks involve summarizing literature searches and assisting with administrative and research support for the genomic medicine team. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills; work well independently and as part of a team, and have a strong interest in academics.

Research Activity (80%)
• Recruitment of study participants
• Screen potential study participants for eligibility and obtain informed consent
• Scheduling assessments with various clinicians and researchers
• Create and maintain patient charts
• Track and enter study information into database
• Summarize literature searches
• Maintain databases

Professional Competence and Activity (15%)
• Attend weekly lab and MIND Institute coordinator meetings, with presentation of preliminary data analyses and discussion of journal articles at lab meetings.
• Prepare data analysis using Mindware HRV Analysis software and basic statistics and data visualization
• Presentation (poster or oral) at regional/national meetings in relevant fields (e.g. UC Davis Human Genomics symposium, etc.)
• Attend research presentations at the MIND Institute, including biweekly Research Seminar Series talks and Monthly Distinguished Lecture Series presentations
• As needed, assist PI with preparation of grant applications and manuscripts, such as conducting a literature review and analyses of pilot data

University and Public Service (5%)
• Establish and maintain positive relationships with community groups and other neurodevelopmental organizations for recruitment purposes
• Assist in mentorship of volunteer undergraduate research assistants

Basic Qualifications:
• Bachelor degree in genetics or genomics or a related field with a minimum of 1-2 years' experience in field research.
• Proficiency to effectively use personal computer and software such as Word, Excel, and various industry-oriented Electronic Data Capture programs to collect and organize data (i.e., experience with Microsoft Access, REDCap, and SPSS).
• Must be able to communicate proficiently in English, both written and orally.
• Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills to effectively work with physicians and other health care professionals, patients and families, and research and administrative support staff. Teamwork is critical for this position.
• Organizational skills and attention to detail in maintaining large volumes of accurate, retrievable records.
• Ability to determine workload priorities in an appropriate way to accomplish tasks or goals, and anticipate and solve potential problems during changing conditions and deadlines.
• Familiarity with the patient population in the Genomic Medicine Division.
• Ability to respond promptly and positively to patients, families, associates, and all others in a respectful, courteous manner.
• Demonstrated successful performance in a high-intensity, collaborative work environment is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience working with electronic medical records.
• Ability to write and modify standard operating procedures is helpful.

Position available/closing date:

Salary: Step I - $39,500 [100% annual]

Term of appointment: 12-month term appointment from start date at 100% time; additional one-year term renewal may be available contingent of funding and performance.
