This position will aid in interdisciplinary studies of the interactions of hydrology and ecology in montane and lowland stream systems. Specifically, the position will assist in the collection, compilation, and assessment of large geospatial datasets incorporating hydrologic data, biologic data and landscape attributes. Data management and geospatial modeling using GIS and Program R software are key responsibilities of this position. Successful candidates will also participate in field studies to collect geospatial data using unmanned aerial vehicles, surveying and GPS equipment, aquatic habitat data, biologic data, and water quality attributes. Duties include management of large databases and datasets; analysis and modeling of geospatial data; assist with field data collection (seasonally); and participate in data entry, post-processing, data synthesis and statistical analysis. Conduct literature searches and help write annual reports to funders. Actively and significantly involved in creative activities of publishing research and designing future research including reviewing journal articles; engaging in discussions of research to assist in interpreting results; assisting more senior researchers in preparing manuscripts for peer-review journals by writing methods sections and commenting on draft manuscripts; and participating in design of studies as part of writing research proposals by applying experience to revise study designs. Present research results at local and regional meetings including the Society for Freshwater Science, Salmonid Restoration Federation, American Fisheries Society, Bay-Delta Science Conference, among others. Mentor and lead undergraduate and similar field assistants; participate and serve on committees of department, college, campus and other University entities, as appropriate.
• Bachelor degree in Hydrology, Biology, Environmental Sciences or a related field, with a minimum of one year’s experience in geospatial analysis and field research.
• Current California Driver’s License
• Experience using MS Excel and Word; ArcGIS and Program R software.
• Experience in stream flow, water temperature, water quality, or geomorphic monitoring.
• Knowledge of conducting geospatial analysis and modeling in ArcGIS and associated statistical analysis in ArcGIS and Program R.
• Knowledge of unmanned aerial vehicle (i.e., drone) operation sufficient to acquire an FAA operator’s license
• Knowledge of experimental design, statistical analysis or technical writing for academic publications or policy decisions.
• Experience in team-based work that requires communication, decision-making skills, cooperation and leadership
• Ability to work independently and remain focused for long periods of time while conducting geospatial analyses and database management
• Ability to walk several miles to research sites for purposes of data collection; work in adverse weather condition; bend, squat, crouch and pull and lift up to 50 pounds of survey equipment during field sampling days of 8-10 hours duration.
• Small Unmanned Aircraft FAA operator’s license
• Experience in conducting geospatial analysis and modeling in ArcGIS and associated statistical analysis in ArcGIS and R
• Experience in technical writing of academic research publications
• Experience in applied research in support of policy decisions
• Ability to mentor and lead undergraduate and similar field assistants
• Ability to communicate research objectives and findings to a non-technical audience, including, but not limited to, stakeholders, policy-makers, or the general public
TERM OF APPOINTMENT:
100%, salary starts at step 1 or 2 commensurate with experience. Start date 2/01/19 - 01/31/20 with possibility for extension depending on project need and funding.
