The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of California, Davis invites applications for one Junior Specialist in molecular, cell and developmental biology.
Research (95%): This position will be involved in developing genetic tools for Hydra vulgaris as part of an initiative funded by an NSF EDGE grant. The successful candidate will create transgenic and genetically modified lines of Hydra by microinjection, with the goal of temporal and spatial control of gene expression. The candidate will be required to clone plasmid DNA using PCR, restriction digests, ligations, and DNA preps. The position also requires maintaining the lab Hydra stocks and ordering laboratory supplies and maintaining lab stocks and databases. In addition, the candidate is expected to review the scientific literature and in conjunction with the Principle investigator, formulate new hypothesis, design new experiments to test those hypotheses and conduct the newly designed experiments. Finally, the candidate will summarize data, prepare figures, and assist writing manuscripts for publication and grant proposals, as well as present their research in regular group meetings. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
Service (5%): The successful candidate will be expected to mentor undergraduates in the lab.
Bachelor degree in cell or molecular biology or a related field is required. A minimum of two years of experience performing basic molecular biology techniques in a research laboratory is preferred. Experience in DNA plasmid cloning, basic microscopy, invertebrate animal care, and microinjections is ideal, but not necessary. Must be able to keep a complete and detailed laboratory notebook of experimental procedures and data and to archive, label and document graphic and tabular data for publication, proposals, and/or presentations. Must be able to work as part of a team.
SALARY RANGE: Step I - $39,500 [100% annual] or Step II - $42,100 [100% annual]), commensurate with qualifications and experience.
POSITION AVAILABLE/CLOSING DATE: The posting will remain open until December 15, 2018 to accommodate department needs.
TERM OF APPOINTMENT: Short term, maximum two-year appointment based on the needs of the research project. Appointments may be made up to 100%.
