An Assistant Project Scientist (APS) position is available in the West Coast Metabolomics Center at the UC Davis Genome Center, a state-of-the-art genomic research facility, http://metabolomics.ucdavis.edu/. In direct collaboration with Principal Investigator Oliver Fiehn and other lab personnel, this position will be involved in multiple research projects.

NATURE AND PURPOSE

The APS will lead the area of mammalian chemical biology research in the Fiehn Metabolomics laboratory. The appointee will participate in ongoing projects, design new studies and interpret data sets that are produced by mass spectrometry-based metabolomics methods in the West Coast Metabolomics Center. The APS is expected to form a small team of young scientists and to develop this team through grant proposals and journal manuscripts.

90% RESEARCH
Collaborative research activity (50% of total efforts)

The candidate will foster existing and develop new research collaborations in linking the chemical biology of mammalian systems with diseases, cellular states, aging and organismal development. The candidate will lead collaborative projects with external partners, including metabolomics data management, data analysis, interpretation and manuscript writing. The candidate will acquire their own metabolomics data or utilize services from the West Coast Metabolomics Center as necessary. Perform metabolomic data interpretations, specifically with respect to linking disease phenotypes to metabolic differences observed in biofluids or tissues. The candidate will seek new partners and projects in mammalian chemical biology, and take initiative when interacting with the laboratory’s collaboration partners and consortia.

It is expected that the candidate will be the lead author on publications and a supporting author on others. The candidate will write grant applications, progress reports, and present data at scientific meetings.

Self-directed research activity (40% of total efforts)

The candidate is expected to design studies and initiate self-initiated research projects in the broad area of metabolomics research that may lead to new journal publications or grant applications. This work specifically entails establishing a team of young scientists who work under the leadership of the APS within the umbrella of the Fiehn research laboratory. The appointee may select one or several areas of special interest, such as cancer and stem cell biology, or nutritional biology, exercise or aging.

5% PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY

The candidate will participate in professional societies and conferences and will serve as a reviewer of research proposals and scientific publications as appropriate. The candidate will give presentations at conferences, seminars, laboratory meetings or educational functions. The appointee will train, consult with, and advise graduate students and researchers with regards to metabolomics, biochemistry, chemical biology and related projects.

5% UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE

The candidate will engage in University service activities such as guest lecturing and committee service. Participate in activities of committees within the Genome Center, campus and other University entities, as appropriate. The candidate will actively engage and lead professional instructions in courses given by the West Coast Metabolomics Center, including preparation of materials, discussing strategies and leading practical examples with course participants. Teaching classroom courses is not an expectation of this position, but encouraged.
