Research (95%): This position will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing structural studies of complexes involved in regulating assembly of tubulin into microtubules in the cytoplasm, Cilia and Flagella. The successful candidate will create DNA constructs, express and purify protein complexes in bacterial and insect cell systems. The candidate will utilize cryo-electron microscopy structural biology approaches to study the structures of these regulators in complex with tubulin dimers. The candidate will also carry computational image analyses using programs such as RELION, cryosparc. The candidate may also perform single molecule fluorescent reconstitution experiments studying the activities of these regulators with polymerizing dynamic microtubules. In addition, the candidate is expected to review the scientific literature, and in conjunction with the Principle investigator formulate new hypotheses, design new experiments to test those hypotheses and conduct the newly designed experiments. The candidate is also expected to engage in, and present their work at, lab and group research meetings, as well as help prepare figures and assist in writing manuscripts for publication, and for reports for grant proposals as needed.
