Description

The Institute for Regenerative Cures, Division of Hematology Oncology, Department of Internal Medicine, UC Davis School of Medicine is recruiting one full-time faculty in the Regular and/or In Residence series as an Associate Professor or Full Professor in the specialty of basic science and/or translational research in gene therapy/ genetic modification of human hematopoietic stem cells and humanized mouse transplant models of human gene therapy.

The division has 38 faculty, 12 staff physicians, 10 fellows, 53 staff and operates a large and diverse clinical and research program. The division is a major component of the NCI-designated UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center and has a strong presence in developmental therapeutics with an Experimental Therapeutics Clinical Trials Network (ETCTN) grant and as a Lead Academic Participating Site (LAPS) with the NCI National Clinical Trials Network. The UC Davis School of Medicine is in the top twenty percent for NIH funding and one of the inaugural Clinical and Translational Award sites. Position Responsibilities: The successful applicant will engage in oncology clinical translational research with a record of high impact publications supported by extramural funding. The focus will be on research related to lysosomal storage diseases, genetic engineering, and stem cell therapies to treat HIV/AIDS-related leukemia, and/or early phase therapeutic development. Demonstrated excellence in teaching, and ability to build research teams and conduct collaborative science. In addition, must be highly collaborative and assist in the development of innovative investigator-initiated clinical trials.
Preference will be given to candidates with an established or developing basic and translational research program that can be competitive for external research funding. The selected candidate will develop an independent research program that focuses on genetic modification of human hematopoietic stem cells. This research program will provide the foundation for the understanding of the treatment of single gene defects through the transplantation of gene-modified hematopoietic stem cells and potential for a leadership role within the Division of Hematology Oncology and/or the UC Davis Institute for Regenerative Cures, Stem Cell Program.

Application Requirements:

Qualified candidates must possess a Ph.D. or M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree in cell biology, biomedical engineering, or related field. Experience in, and the ability to teach undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral scholars, and research lab personnel. The ability and experience to conduct scholarly/ translational research and participate in Phase I-III clinical trials are required. A record of publication in peer-reviewed journals is required. The ability to work cooperatively and collegially within a diverse environment is required. Evidence of success in obtaining extramural funding and/or administering clinical trials is highly desirable. Experience with FDA pre-IND and IND applications is preferred.

Preferred qualifications:
• At least five (5) years of established high-impact scholarly/Phase I-III clinical trial translational research
• Publications in HSC gene therapy
• Candidates with an established or developing basic and translational research program (or proven external funding from Foundations, and from NIH or equivalent levels) and/or administering clinical trials
• Experience with FDA pre-IND and IND applications

This recruitment is conducted at the Associate Professor or Full Professor rank. The resulting hire will be at the associate/professor rank, depending on the proposed appointee’s qualifications.
