Responsibilities of this position will include planning, execution and presentation of research on human brain MRI and PET scans. A successful candidate will participate in lab activities, particularly around issues of image processing and data analysis. For example, the incumbent will perform quantitative cross sectional and longitudinal volumetric analysis on human brain MRI images using software developed in the laboratory. The applicant will also perform region specific volumetric brain analysis which will include the hippocampus and other regions of interest. This will be done in collaboration with the Lab PI, other faculty in the lab and other Junior Specialists. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal skills in communication and writing; as well as the ability to work independently or in a team.
The incumbent must have a Bachelor's Degree with a major in neurobiology, biological sciences or a related field. In addition to a strong background in neurobiology and science, the incumbent will be expected to have experience working in a research laboratory. Demonstrated ability to work independently, taking initiative, making critical decisions and communication of ideas. Ability to work full-time.
Preferred qualifications include previous experience in creating and managing sortable and searchable imaging data spreadsheets. Some knowledge and experience with UNIX/LINUX operating systems. Some experience using statistical software (e.g. R program). Additional training on specialized software will be provided.
The incumbent will work under the supervision of Dr. Charles DeCarli in the Department of Neurology.
Research and Professional Competence:
The incumbent will be expected to produce contributions of a high academic caliber that will result in authorship on scientific papers published in peer-reviewed journals (e.g., Stroke, Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, Neurobiology of Aging, etc.).
Participate in bi-weekly meetings at the IDeA Lab and will be required to attend a monthly Clinical and Pathological conference at the Lawrence J. Ellison Ambulatory Care Center in Sacramento. The candidate will also be required to attend to other talks given by faculty, both on and off campus throughout the year, which will discuss current and ongoing research projects.
University and Public service:
The Junior Specialist will be expected to provide mentorship to undergraduate research assistants that rotate through the lab. This includes undergraduate students coming from the Advancing Diversity in Aging Research (ADAR) and other such programs.
SALARY RANGE: Step I - $39,500 [100% annual] or Step II - $42,100 [100% annual]), commensurate with qualifications and experience.
This position is funded at 100% time and is contracted for a year. There is the possibility of a year extension depending on work performance. This contract cannot be extended beyond two years. This job is geared for someone planning to take a year or two off before going to medical or professional school.
