The Department of Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior at the University of California, Davis invites applications for a qualified Junior Specialist (JPF02335) to serve in general support of molecular, cellular, microcopy-based, and physiological experiments related to the study of skeletal muscle.
This position requires creative contributions to a new research program investigating topics in skeletal muscle physiology, with an emphasis on fibrosis within muscular dystrophies. The candidate will assist in determining research goals for defined projects in regular consultation with the Principal Investigator. S/he will spearhead specific projects, including the selection of appropriate methods and techniques and the documentation and organization of results in preparation of scientific publication or grant proposals. The candidate will train and coordinate the activities of a pool of undergraduate students regarding the technical aspects of the research, to include: colony management, PCR-based genotyping, cell culture, trouble-shooting issues, interpreting results, and planning follow-up experiments. S/he will be responsible for lab upkeep, including ordering of consumables and ensuring the lab is a clean and safe place to work. The candidate will receive specific training for duties required. Experience in muscle physiology, cell culture, microscopy, or animal handling will be considered a bonus. Skill in standard laboratory techniques, quality communication skills, and a strong work ethic are expected.
Professional Competence (5%)
The candidate will be expected to actively contribute to weekly lab meetings and present in that forum an average of 2 times per year on research progress. Additionally, the candidate will be expected to actively contribute in journal clubs designed to discuss an appropriate scientific publication related to lab research. The candidate is encouraged to attend seminars, present research outside the lab setting, and interact with professional interest groups. The candidate will be allowed to engage in public outreach activities that include presenting research results to the public.
The incumbent will act as a mentor for undergraduate volunteers in the lab, and provide training in lab procedures.
• BS degree in biosciences related discipline
• Experience in standard laboratory techniques (pipetting, making solutions, etc)
• Excellent organization skills and precise execution of experimental protocols
• Strong work ethic, quality communication skills, and a positive team player
• Willingness to work with and handle mouse model systems
• Experience in skeletal muscle physiology
• Experience in mouse handling
• Affinity and experience with a range of microscopy-based imaging techniques
• Skills in basic cell culture
SALARY RANGE: Step I - $39,500 [100% annual] or Step II - $42,100 [100% annual], commensurate with qualifications and experience.
POSITION AVAILABLE/CLOSING DATE: As openings occur, appointments are made contingent upon availability of funding. The posting will remain open until December 31, 2018 to accommodate department needs.
