The Department of Human Ecology, in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis, is recruiting an Assistant/Associate Professor of Community & Regional Development with an emphasis in Climate Change Socioeconomic Adaptation. This is an academic year (9-month), tenure track, Assistant/Associate Professor position that includes the expectation of mission-oriented research and outreach relevant to the California Agricultural Experiment Station (AES).
The Department of Human Ecology is seeking applicants that focus on Climate Change Socioeconomic Adaptation; any domain(s) of climate change adaptation (e.g., climate-induced migration, rural-urban interface, social and economic transformations, and environmental policy with a focus on local, regional, national, and transnational communities and societies) will be considered. Candidates whose work focuses on these and related topics in diverse communities and regions and/or who are interested in social and economic disparities in community development and climate change are particularly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will coordinate with existing departmental colleagues who have expertise in multiple domains of the community, family, and/or physical environment as context(s) for human equity and well-being.
The appointee is expected to establish a competitively funded research program in climate change socioeconomic adaptation, to address critical or emerging societal issues in any one or more of the following domains of community and regional development: domestic and international migration, rural-urban interface, environmental change and economic development, environmental policy, socioeconomic inequality – including in areas such as housing, employment, public health, and patterns of capital investment and disinvestment. The appointee will be responsible for teaching core (e.g., CRD 164 Theories of Organizations and their Roles in Community Change; CRD 149 Community Development Perspectives on Environmental Justice; CRD 245 Political Economy of Urban and Regional Development) and specialty courses in Community and Regional Development, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The typical course load is three quarter-long courses per academic year (two undergraduate and one graduate). Participation in and development of public outreach and/or community engagement programs, and performance of departmental and university service is expected. This position is expected to work with Cooperative Extension Specialists and Advisors, partners in allied areas or other appropriate public stakeholders.
The resulting hire will be at the Assistant/Associate Professor rank, regardless of the proposed appointee's qualifications.
Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Sociology, Geography, Political Science, Public Policy, Human Ecology, Economics, Regional Planning, Anthropology, or related field. Post-doctoral experience is preferred. Evidence of research excellence is expected. The candidate should have the ability to develop and instruct undergraduate and graduate courses and the ability to develop and conduct extramurally funded research in climate change socioeconomic adaptation.
