The FCCL is an off-campus fish culture and research facility mainly focusing on two federal and state listed fish species, delta smelt and longfin smelt. One of the most important tasks is to maintain a genetically managed refuge population of delta smelt, which represents a safeguard against species extinction in the wild. The FCCL also supplies a certain amount of fish each year to research groups with various topics and provides necessary husbandry consultation and support.
We’re seeking a 100% appointment Junior Specialist I to assist in the delta smelt spawning behavior study and seasonal spawning events for the refuge population. The incumbent will be involved in the study mainly focus on, but not limit to, 1) observe and document the delta smelt spawning behavior, 2) obtain the flow velocity required for egg hatching, 3) determine the spawning preference between substrates and water depths, and 4) study the effect of salinity on the hatching of eggs. The incumbent is also required to manage the delta smelt refuge population, which includes, but is not limited to: assisting with tagging, fin-clipping, and spawning operations, tracking spawning condition of brood stock with other staff, relaying information to geneticist on nearly daily basis, recording spawn success, recording larval and juvenile survival and growth (data gathered by others), and assisting with all fish culture operations.
The candidate should also be actively involved in engaging in the design of the study, construction of the testing systems, discussions on research and the interpretation of research results with collaborators and funding agency coordinators, presenting research data in society annual conferences including Interagency Ecological Program (IEP) Annual Workshop and Biennial State of the San Francisco Estuary Conference, and drafting manuscripts for future publications. The Junior Specialist’s contribution to manuscripts is to independently complete data collection, analysis, summary, figure development, and drafting sections of the manuscript. Beyond this, the incumbent will contribute figures/tables to other manuscripts in the lab and will be included as a co-author on those papers. The Junior Specialist will also provide mentorship to undergraduate students, who the candidate will mentor on the operation of aquaculture systems and data analysis.
This job requires to work under indoor and outdoor conditions over rough terrain daily. Physical strength and endurance to move throughout facility is required. • BA/BS in aquaculture, fisheries sciences, ecology, agricultural engineering, biostatistics or related fields.
• Provide own, reliable, transportation to and from work site.
• Familiar and experienced in statistical data analysis.
• Experience with various software programs for data summary, image analysis, and reporting (i.e. Excel, graphing procedures, statistical analysis, PowerPoint).
• Laboratory skills to prepare solutions.
• Able to work well under supervision and with others.
• Be able to lift or move 40-75 lbs on regular basis and up to 180 lbs on occasion with assistance.
• Experience in spawning behavior of fish.
• Experience in fish behavior monitoring.
• Good oral and written skills to communicate data summary to collaboration parties.
• Work under extreme weather conditions.
• Ascend and descend ladders up to 20' on occasion.
• Exposure to agricultural herbicides and pesticides.
• Need to handle hazardous laboratory chemicals
