Description

The University of California, Davis, School of Medicine, Department of Public Health Sciences invites applications for a faculty position at the Adjunct Assistant Professor level with expertise in cancer health disparities and community engagement and outreach. This is an adjunct appointment, supported by grant funds, with negotiable teaching responsibilities. Successful applicants must have a Ph.D., Dr.P.H in public health, health policy, health services research, behavioral health or a related field; or an M.D with an accompanying public health graduate degree. The candidate must have experience developing and conducting interventions aimed at reducing the cancer burden in underserved and minority populations. Special preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated ability to conduct scholarly research; experience with engaging diverse communities in cancer health disparities research; and a research interest in accelerating uptake of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.

The mission of the Department of Public Health Sciences is to improve the health of people through population-based approaches by developing and evaluating educational programs, conducting epidemiologic research, engaging in public service and developing policy and other translational outcomes. The Department covers a broad area of public health domains with a focus on health promotion and disease and injury prevention, occupational and environmental health, cancer, health care policy, aging, ethical issues, reproductive, women’s, children’s, rural, minority, immigrant and global health.

The position will be located within the Department of Public Health Sciences, and the successful candidate will be expected to participate in establishing or established cancer health disparities activities; including collaborative research with community health clinics, state and federal agencies and local community based organizations. One example is a HPV vaccine environmental scan project which involves: conducting key informant interviews and administered online surveys with HPV vaccine stakeholders; conducting a literature review of CA state legislative activities related to the HPV vaccinations; reviewing data sources for HPV vaccination rates; and creating a formal evidence-based HPV vaccination research, outreach, and education agenda for the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center’s catchment area. Interdisciplinary research is central to this position, as this work is conducted in collaboration with university researchers in medicine, public health, community engagement and outreach, and population health as well as community advocates and state-level leaders.

Among other responsibilities, the faculty member hired for this position will:
• Strengthen the Public Health Sciences Department’s cancer health disparities and community engagement, outreach expertise, and promote interdisciplinary collaboration in the area of cancer disparities research.
• Develop and teach courses in public health for MPH and PhD students.

• Conceive, prepare and submit grant and contract proposals to support her/his research agenda;

• Work cooperatively and collegially within a diverse environment.

Candidates will also participate in professional activities at local, state, regional, and national levels including disseminating knowledge through peer-reviewed publications, participation in and presentation at interdisciplinary and scientific meetings, and professional academic outreach and engagement.
