Dr. Nicole Baumgarth at the Center for Comparative Medicine of the University of California, Davis (http://ccm.ucdavis.edu/faculty/baumgarth/) seeks to fill a full-time research assistant position at the Junior Specialist level. Preferred begin date is August 1, 2018. This is a 1-year position with the possibility of renewal depending on grant funding.

NATURE AND PURPOSE

The work to be conducted is part of a multi-center, international collaboration on mouse phenotyping with the goal to identify new genes regulating leukocyte development and maintenance. The appointment will involve high-throughput immunophenotyping of spleen cells from genetically altered mice by flow cytometry.

RESEARCH (90%):

For that, the Junior Specialist will be responsible for the preparation of mouse tissues for flow cytometric analysis, cell staining, data collection, data analysis and management. Responsibilities will also include the generation and testing of various laboratory reagents and critical evaluation of protocols and work flows. The Junior Specialist will be expected to be actively involved in the research activities of the laboratory, including reviewing the literature in the area of study, engaging in discussions with the research team, analyzing and interpreting research results, helping write research reports and articles as well as general lab duties. The Junior Specialist will be highly organized and detail-oriented, willing to learn and apply what is learned to their work, ability to trouble-shoot, and will also have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills, as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team. The position is ideally suited for a person who is interested in gaining research experience before applying to graduate school.

Prior experience with flow cytometry, including the use of FlowJo data analysis software, would be considered a plus, but is not required.

Duties and responsibilities may include:
Preparation of mouse lymphoid tissues into single cell suspensions; Complex multiparameter staining; Data acquisition using high-end multicolor flow cytometers; Protocol and reagent trouble-shooting; Data analysis using Flow Jo Software; Preparation of data summary tables and reports; Data management and storage/interaction with IT support.

PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE & ACTIVITY (5%)
Will be expected to present their results at local and/or national meetings.

UNIVERSITY & PUBLIC SERVICE (5%)
The Junior Specialist may also prepare research presentations (e.g., poster presentations) and participate in laboratory and research meetings, including serving on the CCM Scientific Sharing Committee, and participation on the CCM "What's Up Seminar" series.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology, Immunology, or a related field
Some previous laboratory work experience
Demonstrated experience, or willingness to learn, data analysis using Flow Jo software
Ability to generate summary Excel spreadsheet tables and data summaries
Ability to occasionally work evenings and weekend hours when required for data collection.
