Professor Ben Montpetit, at the University of California, Davis, is seeking a 100% time, step 1 Junior Specialist to assist senior members of his research team. This position will involve research on the molecular and cell biology of Flaviviridae family viruses, as well as research related to viral RNA transport within human cells.
The incumbent will be responsible for (i) culturing mammalian cells, (ii) infecting cells with virus, (iii) isolating viral RNA and evaluating interactions with host cell components, and (iv) next generation sequencing library preparation. The incumbent will be expected to work independently to develop and execute experimental plans in partnership with senior personnel, to analyze and interpret the data she/he collects, to propose future experimentation, and to present her/his findings to the research group through oral and written communication. Through these activities the incumbent will contribute significantly to the advancement of the projects and future directions for the research.
To perform these roles successfully, it is expected that the incumbent will actively read the literature, attend local campus seminars related to her/his research, and both attend and present her/his work at regional and national scientific conferences. National conferences could include the annual meetings of the RNA Society, American Society for Cell Biology, and American Society for Virology, to which membership would also be obtained. To gain advanced training and skills the junior specialist may attend campus workshops (e.g. bioinformatics training) or be sent to the laboratory of collaborators for advanced skills training. It is expected that the junior specialist will also co-author manuscripts with the PI, which will involve manuscript writing and figure preparation. The junior specialist will also be expected to provide mentorship to undergraduate students, training them in cell and molecular biology laboratory techniques.
- B.S. in Biological sciences in the area of Biochemistry, Molecular biology, Cell biology, or Microbiology
- >1 year of experience working in a research lab (e.g. directed undergraduate research, summer research, honors programs, or work post-degree)
- Experience with common laboratory skills, including PCR, DNA & RNA isolation, western blotting, and mammalian cell culture
- experience working with viruses in tissue culture, including virus infection
- experience with tissue culture, including RNAi knockdown, generation of stable cell lines, transfection
- experience in any of the areas of proteomics, next-generation sequencing, bioinformatics, fluorescent imaging, or characterization of RNA-binding interactions.
