Description

I. Research in specialized Areas (90% effort)
a. This position will be involved in interdisciplinary studies linking food production, human health, and the physical environment. Specifically, successful candidates will work with the project team to identify and/or develop formal ontologies that will be used to describe the relationships between a wide variety of data types in the Sacramento, California region to better understand the future sustainability of the regional food system. The candidate will conduct reviews of existing ontologies to identify those of use in this project.
b. Where there are gaps in existing ontologies, the candidate will work with the project team to propose and develop new ontologies. One product that the candidate will contribute to is development of an ontological structure to classify people, organizational affiliations, and areas of expertise and then populate that structure with data about stakeholders in the Sacramento Region. Ontologies developed through this work will be used to link together diverse types of data to inform sustainability planning by stakeholders in the Sacramento region. The ontologies will also be used in future sustainability research by the Food Systems Informatics program at the UCD Agricultural Sustainability Institute as well as other interested research teams in the US and internationally. The candidate will be responsible for developing text describing the methods for this ontology development and also the data capture process in manuscripts to be submitted for peer-reviewed publication.

II. Professional competence and Activity (5% effort)
a. Participate in appropriate professional groups and other educational and research organizations.
b. Review full manuscripts prior to submission, in collaboration with other team members.
c. Present their work to one or more peer groups of researchers and participate in the international conference on food ontology operability data and semantics (IC-FOODS).
d. Organize and participate in research group meetings related to the research.

III. University and Public Service (5% effort)
a. Mentorship of undergraduate students that may provide work on the project.
b. Service on university committees as appropriate.

Salary Range: Step 1 - $18.92 hr. or Step II - $20.16 hr. commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Term of Appointment: 30% for the period of July 16, 2018-July 31, 2019
