Description

The Department of Neurology at the University of California, Davis, invites applicants for a Junior Specialist position. The Junior Specialist will be involved in laboratory studies of animal models of myasthenia gravis and the development of new treatments of this and related autoimmune disease under supervision of the principal investigator and the project scientist. The experiments include DNA cloning, expression and purification of recombinant proteins in mammalian cells, antibody and other immunologic assays of animal and human cells in vitro and in vivo, care and clinical evaluation of animals with experimental myasthenia. Experience in any of these areas is desirable.

The position will be supported by NIH/NINDS funded grants and grants from voluntary health organizations. General responsibilities include assisting the Project Investigators in experiment planning and design, scientific documentation of the experiments/results and preparation of manuscripts for publication and grant proposals.

The successful candidate will engage in research and professional competence activities with the Project Investigator(s) such as peer-reviewed publications, grant proposals, research reports and talk/poster presentations. The candidate will participate in all lab meetings, discussing ongoing and future projects with clinical and research faculty and staff. The candidate will attend discussions with collaborators such as weekly journal clubs, Neurology Grand Rounds, conferences and other relevant presentations. In addition, the candidate will be expected to provide University and public service by assisting in the mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students on lab operations.
The candidate is expected to contribute to the dynamic academic environment at the Richman Lab.

Basic Requirements:

  1. Bachelor's Degree in the arts or sciences
  2. Experience in bench and animal research
  3. The ability to work well independently and as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, antibody assays, tissue culture, immunohistochemistry, and animal handling. .
  2. Skill in oral and written communication

SALARY RANGE: Step I - $18.26/hour or Step II - $19.48/hour commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Appointments are made contingent upon availability of funding. The term of appointment is short term, based on the needs of the research projects. Appointments may be made up to 100%.
