The University of California, Davis, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is recruiting for an Assistant Professional Researcher The candidate for this position will develop an independent research program on functional outcomes in adolescents with ADHD and other disorders, as well as typically developing adolescents with elevated impulsivity. The specific focus of this program will be a) to investigate the factors that contribute to functional outcome, such as psychiatric, academic and vocational achievement; b) investigate factors that contribute to poor functional outcomes, such as impulsivity, risky behavior and self-harm and good outcomes and resilience; c) investigate individual difference in factors in the developmental trajectory that confer risk and resilience for functional outcomes d) lead to designing interventions to improve functional outcomes using technical interventions; e) these interventions may involve technology such as smart-phone app-based and virtual reality based interventions, or “fidgeting tools”; f) additionally this project will involve using functional and anatomical MRI to elucidate the neural basis associated with the above-stated topics.

It is anticipated that the development and implementation of this program of research will entail submitting applications for extramural funding independently and in collaboration with other faculty members in the Department of Psychiatry (including Dr. Schweitzer), the MIND Institute and other departments and programs in UC Davis, as well as carrying out her roles in currently funded collaborative research projects. Anticipated sources of funding include the National Institute of Health, foundations and other similar research funding initiatives.

These extramural projects will involve developing research protocols, administering the protocols and collecting and analyzing data. They will also include advanced anatomical and functional MRI data analysis, software engineering and management, data management and quality assurance.

This position will also be responsible for training and managing the staff, students, budget and reporting requirements of the above-mentioned research projects, and research projects under any additional new grants they might secure.

The Department of Psychiatry has approximately 60 residents in six residency training programs and 90 faculty and staff psychiatrists and psychologists. The Department provides a stimulating teaching and academic environment and serves a culturally diverse population.

Basic Qualifications: Qualified candidates must possess a Ph.D. in Cognitive Neuroscience, Psychiatry or a related field; and formal degree training in computer science or engineering. This applicant will have been awarded the Ph.D. within the past 10 years, and have a minimum of 5 years of experience beyond the Ph.D. The applicant will have a background in systems analysis, including supervising employees in developing software and technological applications; a history of conducting research in longitudinal designs assessing behavioral and neuroimaging measures, including adolescent and young adult populations and in ADHD; expertise in studying emotional reactivity and capable of conducting trans-diagnostic psychiatric research. The candidate must have a background in analyzing functional imaging data related to working memory, reward and cognitive control. Experience in research with populations who have cognitive control impairments, such as ADHD and schizophrenia, is required. Experience in programming with MATLAB, C, Python, Perl, Linux, Unix, Windows is required; as is conducting fMRI analysis with SPM and AFNI. The candidate is also required to have experience in planning for virtual reality and app-based interventions for ADHD and related disorders. The candidate will have excellent references related to the ability to work in a team and collaboratively with peers.

This recruitment is conducted at the Assistant rank. The selected candidate will be hired at the Assistant rank, regardless of the proposed appointee's qualifications.
