Assistant Professor of Plant Pathology
The Department of Plant Pathology in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis is recruiting an Assistant Professor of Plant Pathology. This is an academic year (9-month), tenure track, Assistant Professor position that includes the expectation of fundamental research as well as translational research and outreach relevant to the mission of the California Agricultural Experiment Station (AES).
The successful candidate is expected to develop an independent, productive and competitively funded research program in fundamental and/or applied plant pathology. All areas of research of direct relevance to the discipline of plant pathology will be considered. Those with a background in interdisciplinary research, especially research that addresses an emerging area(s) of direct relevance to plant health and disease are encouraged to apply. Candidates able to integrate hypothesis-driven laboratory research with studies conducted in agricultural and/or natural environments are especially desirable. The appointee will be responsible for teaching at the undergraduate level in courses supporting the Department of Plant Pathology and the Global Disease Biology major, and at the graduate level supporting the graduate program in Plant Pathology. This position will play a key role in plant pathology education through instruction in Introduction to Plant Pathology, PLP 120. Additional courses will be assigned based on the candidate’s area of expertise. Potential courses include Advanced Plant Pathology, PLP 201; Field Plant Pathology, PLP 205; Plant-Microbe Interactions, PLP 210; Plant Virology, PLP 230; Plant Bacteriology, PLP 228; Disease Intervention and Policy, GDB 102; Epidemiology, GDB 101, and Disease and Society, SAS 13. Mentoring of graduate students, undergraduate student advising, curricular development, participation in and development of outreach programs, and performance of departmental and university service is expected. The successful candidate will be an active member of the Plant Pathology Graduate Program and other graduate groups as appropriate to the appointee’s interests and expertise. The incumbent will be expected also to support the mission of plant pathology in the AES through teaching, outreach and research that is relevant to disease problems affecting agriculture and/or natural resources in the state of California.
This recruitment is conducted at the assistant rank. The resulting hire will be at the assistant rank, regardless of the proposed appointee's qualifications.
Availability of Space and Resources:
Office and laboratory space will be provided by the Department of Plant Pathology in Hutchison Hall on the UC Davis central campus. Assistance in research grant management and human resources services will be provided by Phoenix Cluster accounting and other personnel. Start-up funding will be provided based on the programmatic needs of the successful candidate. UC Davis has additional resources that will be available to the candidate on a recharge basis, if desired. These include campus greenhouse and controlled environmental chamber facilities for plant and pathogen maintenance; the Biosafety 3P Contained Research Facility for research on exotic plant pests and pathogens; and the Plant Pathology Farm for field research.
• Basic Qualification: Ph.D. degree in plant pathology, microbiology, mycology, virology, bacteriology, epidemiology, or a closely related field with experience, interest and academic coursework related to plant disease.
• Postdoctoral experience in any field of plant pathology and/or related fields is preferred.
• Evidence of success in research and publication.
• Evidence of promise and ability to perform well in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and a commitment to direct graduate students in MS and PhD programs.
• Strong academic performance.
• Evidence of a commitment to seek and the potential to obtain extramural funding for research.
• Interest, understanding, and commitment to the objectives of a land-grant university and the Agricultural Experiment Station including mission-oriented research and a substantive outreach engagement programming.
• Interest, understanding, and commitment to contributing to diversity. Demonstrated ability to contribute to diversity and inclusion of groups that are underrepresented in the academy through extension education, research, and/or service would be a plus.
