Position description

The Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis seeks visionary researchers and educators to join the faculty at the school. This current recruitment is for one full-time academic position at the assistant, associate or full professor rank in the regular series (tenure-track).

In 2017, UC Davis launched the Healthy Aging in the Digital World Institute with a vision to bring person-centered choice through technology and connectedness to older adults and people living with multiple chronic conditions as well as their care partners. The institute will advance health care delivery to include models that support the goals of individuals while also creating better networks of care.

The goals of the institute are to:

  1. Improve the capacity for older adults to live well and thrive in their homes through enabling technology and personalized care
  2. Support care partners by enabling technology to successfully foster wellness in the community
  3. Tailor care to achieve the greatest outcome for people who have chronic illness
  4. Create and generate evidence-based guidance that informs industry and bridges developing technology with real-life home health needs
  5. Provide innovative training opportunities for health care practitioners who can partner with patients and their care partners in ways that recognize their expertise

The candidate will be a member of the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing faculty and also a founding faculty member within the Healthy Aging in a Digital World Institute. Faculty from diverse areas of scholarship are involved in the Healthy Aging in a Digital World, including nursing, medicine, informatics, engineering, visualization, computer science, health economics, sociology and human-centered design.

UC Davis is one of the nation’s top public research universities and is part of the world’s preeminent public university system. UC Davis Health is located on a modern, 140-acre campus in Sacramento, California. The Sacramento campus is home to the School of Medicine, Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing, the Latino Aging Research Resource Center (Research Center for Minority Aging Research), the UC Davis Medical Center (including a level-I trauma center and burn unit as well as a full range of outpatient services), a fully accredited children’s hospital, a NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and a NIH-funded Clinical Translational Science Center. The campus also includes the new Betty Irene Moore Hall (opened in October 2017), an award-winning health sciences education center and library and the Center for Health and Technology, which supports technology-enabled models of care as well as simulation technology for the human health sciences education programs.

The Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis was established in March 2009 through a $100 million commitment from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the nation's largest grant for nursing education. The school has established a robust research program with external funding from federal, state and foundation sponsors since the launch of the school. In 2017, the school was awarded a $5 million grant to create the Family Caregiving Institute, which builds upon the foundation laid by the school’s current scholarship in the area of family caregiving, examining the effectiveness of programs and designing support interventions.

In 2010, the school admitted its first classes for the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in the Nursing Science and Health-Care Leadership Graduate Degree Programs. The Master of Science — Family Nurse Practitioner and Master of Health Services — Physician Assistant Studies programs were added in 2013. A fifth program, which prepares new nurses — the Master’s Entry Program in Nursing — opened in summer 2016. All five programs are led by the Nursing Science and Health-Care Leadership Graduate Group, an interprofessional team of more than 55 faculty members from disciplines including nursing, medicine, health informatics, nutrition, biostatistics, pharmacy, sociology, psychology and public health.

EXPECTATIONS
As a ladder-rank faculty member, the successful applicant is expected to engage in research and other scholarly activities, teaching, as well as university and public service. This includes:

  • Conduct significant and innovative research in the areas that advance the goals of the Healthy Aging in a Digital World Institute. Specifically, the candidate should have scholarship related to the health and health care delivery issues experienced by older adults (across care settings) or issues related to aging and technology
  • Contribute to the development and prestige of the School of Nursing through collaborative research leadership, including mentoring and support of student scholarship and research
  • Teaching within the School of Nursing educational portfolio commensurate with regular series (tenure-track) positions
  • Develop new and collaborative research that draws on the strengths of the School of Nursing, UC Davis Health, the Family Caregiving Institute, other UC Davis graduate programs and research initiatives, or UC-wide initiatives
  • Successfully secure extramural funding
  • Engage in service and professional activities, including committee ---appointments within the school, the university and at the local, state, regional and national levels
  • Disseminate knowledge through publications as well as participate and present at interdisciplinary and interprofessional education and scientific meetings
  • Serve as a contributing member of the Nursing Science and Health-Care Leadership Graduate Group

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
A doctoral degree (Ph.D. required) conferred by June 30, 2018, with experience in research and education related to the School of Nursing and Healthy Aging in a Digital World Institute is required. A nurse scientist is strongly preferred. Successful candidates must possess the content expertise required to teach within the School of Nursing educational portfolio. The School of Nursing features an interprofessional faculty with scholars in many disciplines including nursing science, medicine, sociology, psychology, informatics and health policy.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Scholarship and professional interests synergistic with the Healthy Aging in a Digital World Institute. The candidate should have scholarship related to the health and healthcare delivery issues experienced by older adults (across care settings) and/or issues related to aging and technology
  • Leadership attributes and communication skills to successfully convey the goals of the institute and to nurture and sustain innovative partnerships

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
A registered nursing license or eligible for nursing licensure in the state of California is strongly preferred. Postdoctoral training or equivalent academic experience is preferred. Candidates should demonstrate previous engagement in service and professional activities including committee appointments at the local, state, regional and national levels that is commensurate with rank. The School of Nursing values atypical and innovative partnerships and successful candidates will have experience navigating such relationships.

SPECIALIZATION
The school seeks candidates with scholarship that supports the vision of the Healthy Aging in a Digital World, including transdisciplinary research to discover and validate the evidence for effective and innovative approaches and interventions that emphasize multicultural approaches and the use of enabling technology to optimize care.
