The Department of Entomology and Nematology, internationally recognized as a premier center of excellence in research, teaching, and extension, is seeking applications for a Specialist in Cooperative Extension (CE) to join the faculty at the Assistant rank with a designated emphasis in field and vegetable crop entomology. Part of the mission of the Department of Entomology and Nematology is to develop and disseminate comprehensive basic and applied knowledge regarding the management of pest arthropods. A Cooperative Extension (CE) Specialist is being recruited to conduct original applied research that will result in establishing an internationally recognized and extramurally funded original applied research program focused on managing and reducing the impact of arthropod pests in commercial field and vegetable crops through use of sustainable Integrated Pest Management (IPM) principles, and to develop and implement an extension education and outreach program that extends information to various clientele including state-licensed pest control advisers (PCA’s), grower groups, and governmental agencies as well as under-represented groups. Research and extension outreach activities will be closely integrated with UC Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR), including county-based CE academics and clientele as well as campus-based CE and ladder rank faculty.
Responsibilities: This is a full time, career-track appointment that includes the expectation that the appointee will conduct research and engage in extension education and outreach that advances the mission of the Department of Entomology and Nematology and ANR. Cooperative Extension Specialists have many of the same career opportunities and rights and privileges as faculty in the professorial ranks but do not have classroom teaching responsibilities, freeing them to do extension education and applied research with partners throughout California. The focus of this position will be on sustainable IPM of field and vegetable crops. Accordingly, applicants should have the professional background necessary to conduct original research in entomology and pest management, and excellent communication skills to facilitate extension of information to clientele. By developing reciprocal and mutually beneficial relationships with colleagues and with various stakeholders, the candidate should become a knowledgeable partner who can provide reliable information and build research-informed networks to address issues of regional and statewide importance in California.
Extension Teaching: A person in this position is expected to provide leadership as a liaison between campus-based researchers, CE campus and county based academics, and clientele and colleague groups such as commodity boards, crop consultant organizations (e.g. CAPCA and AAIE), and agencies (e.g. CDFA and CDPR). This will include providing information appropriate to stakeholders through print publications, web-based resources and in-person presentations, and serving as a resource for other CE academics.
Applied Research: The successful candidate will: 1) conduct applied research related to management of arthropod pests of field and vegetable crops; 2) publish and present the results of applied research or other creative activities in appropriate peer-reviewed journals, professional society meetings, and through additional novel methods. Areas of emphasis may include any of the following: invasive species, insecticide resistance, IPM strategies, reduced-risk pesticides, biological controls including microbial insecticides, cultural controls, and host-plant resistance.
Professional Competence and Activity: The candidate will be expected to participate in professional society activities including presenting papers at national and international meetings; reviewing manuscripts and grant proposals in his/her area of expertise; and establishing productive working relationships with scientists and extension personnel in other states and countries. The goal would be to establish national and international recognition for scholarly contributions to the science and practice of arthropod pest management, as he/she advances to the higher ranks in the UC system.
Salary: Commensurate with experience.
