POSITION DESCRIPTION – Junior Specialist @49%
NATURE AND PURPOSE:
The position of Junior Specialist has a narrow focus in a specialized area and provides technical or specialized expertise (e.g., with instrumentation and research equipment, or with research methods) in the planning and execution of a research project. Junior Specialists are required to be actively and significantly involved in publishable research activities, including reviewing journal articles and engaging in discussions on research design and execution as well as the interpretation of research results. Junior Specialists are also expected to participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations as well as review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications as applicable related to their research area of expertise
Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry/Pharmaceutical Chemistry is required.
1 year of experience in a chemistry lab is desirable.
1) A) RESEARCH (80% effort)
Work under the direction of the Principle Investigator on research projects.
The candidate is expected to perform following research activities independently:
• Design and synthesis of one-bead one-compound (OBOC) combinatorial libraries to identify Zika virus capturing agents.
• Optimization of lead compounds using a combination approach of medicinal chemistry and OBOC focus library, as well as computer-assisted drug design methodology.
• Purification of individual compounds with HPLC and structure elucidation with spectroscopic techniques such as MS and NMR.
Jr. Specialist will have weekly meetings and discussions with personnel affiliated with research activities involving OBOC combinatorial libraries, organic synthesis and high throughput screening. Based on the outcome of these research meetings, he/she will design and synthesize new libraries as well as modify the experimental protocols and procedures. Candidate will also be expected to design and synthesize compounds for Combinatorial Chemistry shared resource.
• Publication: The candidate will provide research data (graphs and tables) and write manuscript to be published in the prestigious scientific journals such as the Journal of American Chemical Society, ACS Combinatorial Science, and Bioconjugate Chemistry.
• Grant Acquisition: Assist in writing proposals for funding from federal and state agencies and other funding organizations. The candidate is expected to write scientific methodologies and preliminary results of their research for the grant proposal. The candidate will prepare and assist in the preparation of reports as required by granting agencies. Candidate will also apply for appropriate training grant from intra- or extramural funding resource.
.B) MAINTAINING SAFETY TRAINING RECORDS AND CHEMICAL INVENTORY (5% effort)
C) MAINTAINENANCE, ORGANIZATION AND CLEANLINESS OF LAB (5 % effort)
2) PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5% effort)
The candidate will give poster presentation in scientific conferences such as American Association of Cancer Research (AACR) and American Chemical Society (ACS) as appropriate to his/her specific field. Candidate will also present research results in local symposium such as annual UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center.
3) UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5% effort)
The candidate will engage in public outreach activities that include presenting scientific
research results to the community.
The candidate will engage in University service activities such as mentoring undergraduate students, develop SOP for chemical safety.
Teaching classroom courses is not an expectation of this position.
