The Department of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics at the University of California at Davis seeks to hire a fulltime employee as an Assistant Project Scientist to perform research functions in the laboratory of Professor Wolf-Dietrich Heyer which studies the mechanisms and regulation of recombinational DNA repair and its applications to the cancer clinic.
The successful candidate will work on NIH-funded and/or DOD-funded projects on the mechanism and regulation of recombinational DNA repair using the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model system and in human cells and with human proteins. The work will primarily involve the purification of protein and reconstituting in vitro reactions with purified protein and nucleic acid substartes. The successful candidate will also contribute to experimental design, data collection, data curation, analyses, writing manuscripts and research grants. While the position entails work on one or several specific projects, creative contributions to the ongoing project and future offshoots are expected and encouraged.
The candidate will be able to lead complex research projects independently, in consultation with the PI and with the assistance of other members of the research team. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential, as the laboratory is a diverse team in terms of scientific and personal backgrounds.
In coordination with the PI, the successful candidate will also be responsible for engaging in collaborations, mentoring undergraduate students, graduate students, and occasional visitors.
The candidate will publish research in peer-reviewed journals in collaboration with the PI and/or other members of the research team. It is expected that the candidate write the first draft of any publication, where the cnadiate features as lead author.
Grant Acquisition and Professional Activity
The candidate will assist in writing proposals for funding from federal and state agencies and other funding organizations. The candidate will prepare and assist in the preparation of reports as required by granting agencies.
The candidate will present his work at formal and informal group meetings and participate in the laboratory juornalclub presentations.
The candidate is encouraged to attend scientific conferences and engage in career development activities.
The candidate will contribute in the review of research proposals and scientific publications as appropriate.
The candidate will attend seminars to present research results and is encouraged to give oral presentations to public and professional interest groups.
-Ph.D. in biochemistry or related fields
-More than 5 years of research experience post-PhD
-A distinguished record of original research publications
-The ability to work independently at a high level of competence on complex projects, as evidenced by leading projects resulting in peer-reviewed publications
-Skills and a track record of trouble shooting and optimizing experimental protocols
-Experience with protein purification from various expression systems
-Skills for accurate, complete, and neat record keeping and familiarity with principles of open data and reproducibility
-Advanced experience in protein purification
-Experience in reconstituting in vitro reations with purified proteins
-Molecular cloning or genetic engineering experience
-Experience in advanced substrate design for in vitro reactions
-Experience in mentoring undergraduate and graduate students
