The Project Scientist makes significant and creative contributions to a research or creative project in his/her academic discipline. The appointee possesses specialized knowledge in organic and environmental chemistry including the subject matter expertise and the creative energy necessary to function at a high level of competence. The appointee will participate in activities to increase, improve, or upgrade competency. Appointees with Project (e.g., Scientist) titles may engage in University and public service. They do not have teaching responsibilities. Although the Project Scientist is expected to work independently under the general guidance of an academic member with an independent research program (i.e., Professor, Professional Researcher, Specialist in Cooperative Extension, etc), he/she is not required to develop an independent research program or reputation. He/she will carry out research or creative programs with supervision by and collaboration with an individual in an academic title that carries with it automatic Principal Investigator status. The Project Scientist does not usually serve as a Principal Investigator but in this laboratory they are expected to develop independent and collaborative funding with PI status by exception.
I. RESEARCH (85%)
Research activity (65%)
Under the direction of Dr. Bruce Hammock, the incumbent will make creative contributions to and participate in collaborative development of an active research program(s) in the fields of biochemistry and environmental chemistry with particular emphasis on the use and development of novel biological reagents and analytical techniques. The incumbent will be key personnel on research grants involving the use and development of new methods for the detection of environmental contaminants. The position will require the incumbent to take a leadership role in organic and analytical chemistry, employing techniques such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, bioconjugate chemistry and fine organic synthesis.
The candidate will publish research results in peer-reviewed journals, books and other outlets either independently or in collaboration with the PI or other members of the research team.
Grant Acquisition (10%)
The incumbent will contribute to the development of grant proposals for funding from appropriate agencies and prepare and assist in the preparation of reports as required by funding agencies. The incumbent may serve as a Principal Investigator by exception.
II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (10%)
The incumbent will interact with the laboratory research group and students, communicate research data and results orally and in writing, conduct presentations of research at scientific meetings; training, consulting and advising predoctoral graduate students and postgraduate researchers within the department on their substantive research problems related to experimental design and implementation. Other duties will include organization of seminars and lab presentations when appropriate and reviewing research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications.
III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5%)
The incumbent will engage in public outreach activities that include presenting scientific research results to the general public and providing relevant advice to individuals and public agencies. The incumbent will engage in University service activities such as guest lecturing and committee service.
Ph.D. Degree is required. Ph.D. degree or equivalent in pharmacology, biochemistry or related field.
